Georginio "Gini" Gregion Emile Wijnaldum (born November 11, 1990 in Rotterdam , the Netherlands ) is a Dutch football player who is under contract with Liverpool FC and plays for the national team of the Netherlands . He is mainly used in attacking midfield .

Club career

Feyenoord Rotterdam

From 1997 to 2004 Wijnaldum played in the youth of Sparta Rotterdam before joining city rivals Feyenoord . For the 2006/07 season he was appointed to the first team squad for the first time and completed his first appearance in the Dutch Eredivisie in the game against FC Groningen as a B-youth . At the time of his assignment he was 16 years and 148 days old, making him Feyenoords' youngest first division debutant to date.

At Feyenoord he was in the professional squad since the 2007/08 season and wore the shirt number 25. Since his debut, he made 110 league games for Feyenoord and scored 22 goals; in the 2010/11 season he was used in all season games.

PSV Eindhoven

For the 2011/12 season, Wijnaldum moved to PSV Eindhoven at the age of 20 , where he signed a four-year contract. He made his first league game in the PSV jersey on August 7, 2011 (1st matchday) in the 1: 3 away defeat against AZ Alkmaar . He scored the first goal two game days later on August 21, 2011 in a 3-0 win against ADO Den Haag with the goal to lead them 2-0. At the end of the season he had eight goals in 32 league games.

He increased these numbers in the 2012/13 season when he scored 14 goals in 33 games and ended the season with PSV in second place in the Dutch league.

In the 2013/14 season , Wijnaldum was injured due to back problems from October 2013 to March 2014 and therefore only played eleven league games in which he scored four goals. PSV only finished fourth.

In the 2014/15 season he scored 14 goals in 33 games and thus contributed to PSV Eindhoven becoming Dutch champions for the first time in seven years. At the end of the season, his team had a 17 point lead over Ajax Amsterdam and qualified for the Champions League .

Newcastle United

For the 2015/16 season Wijnaldum moved to the English club Newcastle United in the Premier League . He signed a five-year contract valid until summer 2020. He made his league debut for the new club on August 9, 2015 (1st matchday) in a 2-2 draw against Southampton FC , where he also scored his first goal when he scored a 2-1 lead for Newcastle shortly after half-time . On October 18, 2015 (9th matchday), Wijnaldum scored four goals in a 6-2 win over Norwich City for the first time in his professional career .

Liverpool FC

After descending with Newcastle United Wijnaldum joined the season 2016/17 for FC Liverpool . There he won the Champions League in the 2018/19 season. In December 2019, Wijnaldum and Liverpool won the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup against Flamengo Rio de Janeiro 1-0 after extra time.

National team

On September 2, 2011 Wijnaldum made his debut for the Dutch national team . He came on as a substitute for PSV team-mate Kevin Strootman against San Marino in the 86th minute ; three minutes later he scored the last goal to make it 11-0 for the Dutch.

Wijnaldum's parents both have Surinamese roots. In his youth he was named Georginio Boateng , which came from his Ghanaian stepfather, but took his mother's name after the divorce of his mother and stepfather. His younger brother Giliano Wijnaldum is also a professional footballer.
