Rigobert Song (born July 1, 1976 in Nkanglicock ) is a former Cameroonian football player . He is the record player for the Cameroon national team.
Player career
The center- back Song began his career at Tonnerre Yaoundé in the early 1990s and took part in the 1994 World Cup in the United States at the age of 17 . After the World Cup he moved to the French first division for FC Metz . Here he stayed in France until the 1998 World Cup . He then moved to Italy to Salernitana Calcio , where he stayed until the winter break, and moved to Liverpool in January 1999 . From November 2000 to October 2001 he played at West Ham United , before moving to 1. FC Cologne in the Bundesliga .
At the soccer World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002 , Song played his third World Cup tournament for the Cameroonian national soccer team . In the preliminary round, his team met Germany under coach Winfried Schäfer . After the tournament he left 1. FC Köln, who had been relegated from the Bundesliga, and went back to France for RC Lens . Since the 2004/05 season, the captain of the Cameroonian national team played for Galatasaray Istanbul and had an ongoing contract until 2008. In June 2008 he moved to the Turkish first division side Trabzonspor .
The African champions were the first player to receive two red cards at soccer world championships: in 1994 in the game against Brazil and in 1998 in the game against Chile . The only other player who still managed to do this is Zinédine Zidane (1998 against Saudi Arabia / 2006 against Italy). Song was expelled from the field in 1994 at the age of 17 as the youngest player of the World Cup and in 1998 as the youngest captain.
He is the first African player to appear in four World Cups (1994, 1998, 2002 and 2010). He was the first player to take part in eight African Championships (1996 to 2010) and, with 36 games, played the most games at African Championships.
In August 2010, Song ended his national team career. The defender is the record player for the Cameroon national team with 137 international appearances.
Coaching career
From October 2015 to March 2016, Song coached the Chad national soccer team .
At the end of February 2016 he was appointed coach of the Cameroonian national team for the African Nations Cup .
