The Estádio Municipal de Aveiro ( German  Municipal Stadium of Aveiro ) is a football stadium in the Portuguese city of Aveiro . It was built in the newly created city park on the outskirts of the city. It was one of ten stadiums for the 2004 European Football Championship and was specially built for it.

history

Construction of the soccer arena began in June 2001. The sports facility designed by architect Tomás Taveira offers 32,830 seats and was officially opened on November 15, 2003. The friendly match between Portugal and Greece was played at the opening of the 62 million euro stadium, which ended with a 1-1 draw. The specialty of the stadium is its colorful design. This extends from the facade to the interior and the roof to the colorfully distributed plastic seats in the stands.

The total area of the stadium area is 32 hectares. The spectator stands are completely covered with a 2,250-ton roof, but open to the rear. The construction is supported by twenty steel masts. A total of around 900 VIP and box seats are available in several areas of the stadium . There are parking spaces for more than 3,000 cars and 70 buses around the stadium. In the interior there are two display boards, each with an area of 34 square meters. 140 surveillance cameras were installed for security in and around the stadium . 32 stalls are available for visitors in the stadium.

In 2006, four games of the U-21 European Football Championship took place in Aveiro. From 2009 to 2018, the facility hosted the game for the Portuguese Super Cup .

Nevertheless, apart from the games of SC Beira-Mar, only a few events take place in the stadium. With the exception of the games against Benfica Lisbon , Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto , the games of SC Beira-Mar are usually only attended by a few thousand spectators. After relegation in 2013, the average fell to less than 1,000 viewers per game. But since its promotion to the top league, FC Arouca has moved to the Estádio Municipal for games with an expected high audience. Due to the poor utilization, the high operating costs cannot be refinanced and are a burden on the city. It was requested that the Estádio Municipal de Aveiro be demolished and replaced by a smaller and cheaper stadium. But there are no concrete plans for this.
