Gelson Dany Batalha Martins (born May 11, 1995 in Praia , Cape Verde ) is a Portuguese football player who has been under contract with AS Monaco since the end of January 2019 .
Career
In the club
Sporting Lisbon
Gelson Martins was born in Praia , the capital of Cape Verde , and moved to Portugal as a child. As a youth he played for CF Benfica and Sporting Lisbon . In 2014 he signed a five-year contract with Sporting and was accepted into the B team, for which he made his debut as a substitute in the Segunda Liga on August 24, 2014 . In the summer of 2015 he was promoted to the A-squad by coach Jorge Jesus . He then played his first game for the professional team on August 9, 2015 in a 1-0 victory after extra time in the Supercup against Benfica Lisbon . Five days later he made his debut in the Primeira Liga . After Sporting Lisbon failed to qualify for the Champions League in May 2018 , the club's training grounds and dressing room were stormed by violent supporters. His team-mate Bas Dost suffered a head injury. Then Martins - in addition to coach Jorge Jesus, Bruno Fernandes , William Carvalho , Rui Patrício , Daniel Podence and Bas Dost - terminated his contract at the end of the season, because there were "valid motives" for a unilateral contract termination.
Via Madrid to Monaco
For the 2018/19 season , Martins joined the Spanish first division club Atlético Madrid . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2023. There he could not prevail under Diego Simeone and only played eight league games (one in the starting line-up) by the end of January 2019.
At the end of January 2019, Martins initially moved to French Ligue 1 on loan to the relegation-threatened AS Monaco until the end of the season . Under the head coach Thierry Henry and his successor Leonardo Jardim , he established himself as a regular player and contributed four goals to relegation in 16 league appearances (all in the starting line-up). For the 2019/20 season , AS Monaco finally acquired the transfer rights to Martins, who signed a new contract with a term until June 30, 2024.
In the national team
Gelson Martins played over 40 international matches for Portugal's junior national team. He took part in the 2014 U19 European Championship and the 2015 U20 World Cup . In October 2016 he was part of two World Cup qualifying games under coach Fernando Santos for the first time in the squad of the senior team .
