Youssouf Fofana (born January 10, 1999 in Paris ) is a French football player of Malian descent who has been under contract with the first division club AS Monaco since January 2020 . The midfielder has been a French U21 international since November 2019 .
Career
society
Born in the French capital Paris , Fofana is of Malian descent and played in the youth of various Parisian clubs, most recently for JA Drancy, before scouts from Racing Strasbourg discovered him in January 2017 and brought him into the club's youth department. After playing for the reserve team in the Championnat National 3 for a year , he signed his first professional contract with Racing on September 17, 2018 and was promoted to the first team. He made his Ligue 1 debut on August 24, 2018 (3rd matchday) in the 2-0 away defeat against Olympique Lyon , when he came on for Ibrahima Sissoko in the 84th minute of the game . As a result, he was used sporadically and scored his first goal on January 19 (21st matchday) in a 5-1 away win against AS Monaco . Head coach Thierry Laurey used him as a regular player from this time on, ending the 2018/19 season with 17 league games in which he scored a goal. After he was out for two months in the next 2019/20 season due to an early injury, he returned to the starting line-up in mid-October 2019.
On January 29, 2020, Youssouf Fofana moved to league rivals AS Monaco for a transfer fee of 15 million euros, where he signed a contract until June 30, 2024. On February 1, 2020 (22nd matchday) he made his debut in a 3-1 away defeat against Olympique Nîmes . At the Monegasque he quickly established himself in the starting lineup and finished with 20 league appearances in which he scored a goal.
National team
Fofana played an international match for the French U19 national team in February 2018 . With the U20 he took part in the U20 World Cup 2019 in Poland , where he was used in all four games and was able to score a goal.
He has been a French U21 international since November 2019 .
