Lyle Brent Foster (born September 3, 2000 in Soweto , Gauteng ) is a South African football player on the position of a striker . Since the beginning of 2019, he has been under contract with AS Monaco with games in the top French football league .

Club career

Career start at home

Lyle Foster was born on September 3, 2000 in the city of Soweto in the province of Gauteng , was discovered as a football-playing child by Augusto Palacios and at the age of twelve was brought to the football academy of the South African first division club Orlando Pirates . Here Castro , as the young offensive player was called, went through all junior league classes before he was pulled up to the club's men's team in the 2017/18 season . In the third game of the season, a 1-0 home win over Ajax Cape Town on September 12, 2017, still unused on the bench, he was played three days later in the away game against Maritzburg United (0-0) by coach Milutin Sredojević from 84. Substitute for Abbubaker Mobara . At 17 years and 12 days, he was the youngest player of the Orlando Pirates in the history of the Premier Soccer League and surpassed the record of Lebogang "Cheeseboy" Mokoena , who played 17 years and three at his first PSL game, for around 15 years Months old. Just one year later, Foster was replaced as the record holder by the even younger Augustine Mahlonoko . Four days later, Foster contributed to the winning goal scored by Thabo Qalinge in his team's 1-0 home win over Cape Town City . After another long assignment in the sixth championship round, he was not part of the squad in round 7 and only came on a brief assignment in the eighth round. At the same time, Foster was voted one of the world's 60 best young talents of his year by The Guardian . In autumn 2017, top international clubs, including Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen , showed their interest in Foster.

After that, the right-footed center forward was not part of the Buccaneers ' expanded lineup for around two and a half months , which is the nickname of the Orlando Pirates. One reason was, among other things, his call-up to the South African U-20 team , for which he reappeared more and more towards the end of 2017. In January and February 2018, Foster again completed regular short appearances in the men's team and showed, among other things, on January 20, 2018 in a 1-1 home draw against Polokwane City through his offensive strength, when he, after playing for Innocent Maela in the 74th minute came on, met in minute 86 after preparatory work by Thembinkosi Lorch to equalize 1: 1. In the last third of the championship he was hardly a member of the men's team and just sat on the bench just once without being used shortly before the end of the season. In the final standings, he and the Orlando Pirates were five points behind the Mamelodi Sundowns in second place in the table, which meant that the team qualified for the CAF Champions League 2018/19 . He also made two short appearances in the 2017/18 Nedbank Cup this season , when he and his team were eliminated 0-1 by Cape Town City in the round of 16. He also came to play in the reserve team of the club with play in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge .

Change to France

After completing a trial training session with the reserve team of the French first division club AS Monaco in November 2017, the Franzen invited him again to a ten-week trial training session in summer 2018. Before Foster returned to his homeland in October 2018 to take his final school exams, South African media announced in the same month that Foster would move to AS Monaco in January 2019, where he had signed a five-year contract.

The young South African's move to France was not officially announced until the beginning of 2019. For the French, he should initially be introduced to the professional team via the B-team with play in the fourth-class National 2. Under coach David Bechkoura , he then played eight games (two goals) for the National 2, but also played for the club's U-19 team, including a game against the offspring of Chelsea FC in the play-offs for UEFA Youth League 2018/19 . In the game of the 29th round against Lille OSC on March 15, 2019, Foster sat for the first and only time in Ligue 1 2018/19 on the substitute bench of the professional team, but was not used. In the final standings, the professional team managed to stay in the league with 17th place in the table. In the following season 2019/20 Foster made his debut in the first game against Olympique Lyon on August 9, 2019 in the professional team; At half time, coach Leonardo Jardim replaced him with Gabriel Boschilia . After another brief assignment in the following round, Foster was awarded to the Belgian first division club Cercle Bruges that same month until the end of the season together with his teammate Jonathan Panzo .

As a loan player at Cercle Bruges

In Bruges , Foster was used as a substitute for the first time on September 1st in a 3-2 away defeat against KAA Gent . After that, the young center forward was regularly deployed under Fabien Mercadal and his successor Bernd Storck and has made ten league appearances to date (as of December 14, 2019). Of the last 13 league games since Foster's move, Cercle Bruges was only able to win one (and this only barely). The South African made another appearance in the sixteenth-finals of the Belgian Football Cup 2019/20 , when he played the full 90 minutes in the 0-1 defeat of his team against RUS Rebecquoise , a fourth division club.

National team career

Foster gained his first experience in a youth national team of the South African Football Association in 2016, when he made a number of international appearances for the South African U-17 team in October . In games against his peers from India , China , Brazil and Russia , the offensive player acted as a regular in this U-17 tournament of the BRICS countries and contributed a goal and an assist in the 3-1 win over the Russians. In the following year, Foster was a member of the U-20 national team of South Africa . With this he sometimes enters the COSAFA U-20 championship in Mauritius in 2017 and was used as a regular player at this tournament. The then just 17-year-old scored three goals in the course of the tournament, which made him the top scorer along with his compatriot Luvuyo Mkatshana and the Egyptian Abdou Amir . With the South Africans he reached the final and won it 2-1 over Lesotho . In the game he sent his team 1-0 lead in the fifth minute of the game.

In addition to various other appearances before and after the tournament, including appearances in qualifying for the 2019 U-20 African Football Championship , Stuart Baxter nominated him for the first time for the senior national team of South Africa in May 2018 . As part of a 20-strong South African squad, he then took part in the COSAFA Cup 2018 in his own country from the end of May to the beginning of June 2018 . South Africa was only seeded in the tournament from the quarter-finals and surprisingly lost it on penalties against Madagascar . As a substitute in the squad, he came in the 85th minute for Taariq Fielies on the lawn and was able to register as a goal scorer in the final penalties. In the following consolation round he came on the field in the 4-1 semi-final victory over Namibia from the 84th minute for Ryan Moon and was also in action for a few minutes in the final 3-0 consolation round victory over Botswana as a replacement for the aforementioned Moon.
