Augustine Mahlonoko (born August 17, 2001 in Sebokeng , Gauteng ) is a South African football player on the position of an attacking midfielder . Since the beginning of the 2018/19 season, he has been working for the men's team of the Orlando Pirates with play in the Premier Soccer League , the highest South African soccer league.
Career
Augustine Mahlonoko was born on August 17, 2001 in the township of Sebokeng in the south of the South African province of Gauteng. At a young age he was discovered by those in charge of the Augusto Palacios Apprentice Academy , the football academy of the Peruvian Augusto Palacios , and subsequently accepted at the academy of the South African first division club Orlando Pirates. Over the years, the young midfielder went through all junior league classes and recently showed consistently good performances in the U-17 team, with which he won the Gauteng Future Champs youth football tournament, among other things . After he was slowly introduced to the men's team and last impressed in the spring of 2018 on the club's Project X tour through Brazil , he made the leap into the men's squad at the beginning of the 2018/19 season .
Already in the first game of the season, a 1-1 draw against Highlands Park , Mahlonoko came under coach Milutin Sredojević on a short stint when he came on for Maliele Vincent Pule shortly before the end of the game . At 16 years and 352 days, he was the youngest player to play for the Orlando Pirates in the history of the Premier Soccer League, beating the record set by Lyle Foster about a year earlier , which was 17 years and 12 days old at his first PSL game . In two of the following four championship games in August, the young player came again to short appearances in the highest football league in the country. After that, he was primarily a member of the academy again and also attends the Katleho Impumelelo Secondary School , where he is expected to graduate in 2019 and then aim to study at Sedibeng TVET College . In addition, Gaga , the young offensive talent's nickname, appears as the captain of the club's reserve team with play in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge . In October 2018, like his teammate Lyle Foster a year earlier, he was voted one of the world's 60 best young talents of his year by The Guardian .
