This article covers the English national football team at the 2018 World Cup . England took part in the finals for the fifteenth time.
qualification
The team qualified for the World Cup in Russia through the qualifying matches of the European football association UEFA .
Games
England met in Group F on Slovakia , Scotland , Slovenia , Lithuania and Malta . In the ten resulting games, the English team won eight and played twice. England qualified ahead of schedule for the World Cup finals on the penultimate matchday. The English and Spain conceded the fewest goals (3), but only scored half as many goals as the Iberians. The English were champions of late goals, five of which came in stoppage time, two were the 1-0 winners and one made the final score 2-2.
A total of 31 players were used, 17 of whom were already in the EM squad . Thirteen players were used in at least five games, but no player in all ten games. Two players - goalkeepers Joe Hart and Kyle Walker - were used in nine games. Both were not used only in the last game, which was no longer decisive for qualification. Harry Maguire and Harry Winks made their first international appearance in this last qualifying game, Jesse Lingard already in the second qualifying game on October 8, 2016 against Malta. England began qualifying under team manager Sam Allardyce , who had taken over the team after leaving the European Championship. After a meeting staged by journalists from the Daily Telegraph with alleged investors from the Far East, at which he gave these tips on how to circumvent the Football Association (FA) transfer rules, made fun of his predecessor Roy Hodgson, denigrated national players and the association as "stupid" and is said to have signed a £ 400,000 consultancy agreement with the alleged investors, he was dismissed by the association after just 68 days. Gareth Southgate , head coach of the England U-21 national team, took over the managerial position on an interim basis . Under him, Malta was defeated 2-0, reached a 0-0 in Slovenia and defeated Scotland 3-0. At the end of November he became the head coach of the Three Lions . The English went into the qualification with Wayne Rooney as captain, but he was only used in the first four games and announced his retirement from the national team on August 23, 2017 after he was not considered in two qualifying games and three friendly games.
The top scorer was Harry Kane with five goals , but only scored in four of the last five games. Three players scored two goals each and seven players each scored one goal. Ryan Bertrand scored his first international goal in the qualifying matches in a 4-0 win against Malta.
The English played all home games at London's Wembley Stadium .

Group draw
Venues and quarters (blue / italic) for the English |
For the draw of the qualification groups on December 1st, the English were assigned to pot 2 and could therefore be drawn into a group with defending champions Germany, record world champions Brazil, vice world champions Argentina or host Russia. England meet in Group G on Belgium , Tunisia and Panama . So far, the English senior team has played against Belgium 21 times, won 15 games, lost once (1936) and played five draws. They met twice at world championships and both games were extended: 1954 in the preliminary round (4: 4) and in 1990 in the round of 16 (1: 0). There have only been two games against Tunisia: In 1990 the two separated 1: 1 in a preparatory game for the World Cup, and in the preliminary round of the 1998 World Cup, the English won 2-0. Like the other two opponents, England have never played against Panama. As group winner or runner-up, the English would face the runner-up or winner of group H with Poland.
