In the draw for the six final groups on December 12, 2015, England was placed in Pot 1. England was drawn as the group head of group B. Opponents were the newcomers to the European Championship Slovakia and Wales and Russia. This is the only group with two newcomers to the European Championship. Wales are the second most popular opponents of the English after Scotland . In 101 games since 1879 there have been 66 wins, 21 draws and 14 defeats, the last in the British Home Championship 1983/84 , when these were last played. There were only two games against Russia in qualifying for the Euro 2008 . They both won one game each, but England scored two more goals, but missed the final while Russia qualified. There were only three wins against Slovakia before, two of them in the 2004 European Championship qualification .
The English started with a 1-1 draw against Russia, where they had the greater chances and largely dominated the game, but only scored one goal from a free kick converted directly by Eric Dier . But then they had to accept the equalizer in stoppage time. Against Wales, they fell behind shortly before half-time with a free kick directly converted by Gareth Bale , but were initially able to equalize 14 minutes later with second-half substitute Jamie Vardy and then the winning goal in stoppage time with substitute Daniel Sturridge achieve. After a goalless draw against Slovakia, they had to let the Welsh win the group as they won against Slovakia and Russia. As runners-up in the group, the English now meet Iceland, the runners-up in Group F. There have only been two international matches against the newcomer to the European Championship: in 1982, the two separated 1: 1 in a friendly, in 2004 the English won a small tournament that was still Japan participated 6-1. Only record goal scorers Eiður Guðjohnsen and Wayne Rooney were in the two squads from that game . It was Rooney who converted a penalty for the English to make it 1-0 after a few minutes. But the Icelanders were able to equalize by return of post and take the lead shortly afterwards. They defended them to the end and thus made it to the quarter-finals against hosts France. National coach Hodgson resigned after the game. The British press dubbed the defeat the worst bankruptcy in the history of the Three Lions. England gained points in the FIFA world rankings through the European Championship games and a preparatory game, but lost two places as other teams gained more points.
