At the draw for the six final groups on December 12, 2015, Ukraine was placed in Pot 2 and could therefore face host France, world champions Germany or defending champions Spain. They were drawn to group C with Germany, which they met in the first group game in northern France. Other opponents on the journey from the north to the south of France were EM newcomers Northern Ireland and Poland, with whom they hosted the previous EM. Ukraine had a slightly positive record against Poland up to the European Championship: In seven games there were three wins and two draws and two defeats. Most recently they won twice in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup against Poland, but then both missed them. The Northern Irish had previously faced four opponents and in four games there were two wins against them in qualifying for the 1998 World Cup and two goalless draws in the qualifying games for Euro 2004 , both of which they missed. In contrast, the record against Germany is negative: In three home games it was only enough to draw, the two away games were lost. In a major tournament, Ukraine have not yet met any of the three group opponents.
The Ukrainians started with a 2-0 draw against Germany, but were able to put the world champions into distress after an early deficit and only had to accept the last goal in stoppage time from Bastian Schweinsteiger , who was substituted on a minute earlier and who had a counterattack in the final urge phase Ukrainians successfully graduated. Then they lost to the Northern Irish for the first time - also 2-0 - and thus had no chance of reaching the round of 16. In the last game they also had to accept that the Poles were able to balance their record against the Ukrainians with a 1-0 win. The Ukrainians were eliminated as the only team without a point or goal.
As a result of the European Championship games, Ukraine lost 93 points and eleven places in the FIFA world rankings , together with Austria the most of all European Championship participants.
