Mychajlo Ivanovich Fomenko ( Ukrainian Михайло Іванович Фоменко , internationally used spelling also Mikhail Fomenko ; born September 19, 1948 in Mala Rybyzja , Sumy Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ) is the Ukrainian national football coach and former Soviet football player .
Career
Player career
Fomenko began his career in 1965 with FC Spartak Sumy. In 1970 he moved to Zorya Voroshilovgrad . From 1972 to 1978 the defender played for Dynamo Kiev , with whom he won the Soviet championship three times and the Soviet Cup twice.
In 1975 he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Dynamo Kiev and in the same year the UEFA Super Cup against FC Bayern Munich .
From 1972 to 1976 Fomenko came to 24 missions for the Soviet national team . At the 1976 Olympics he won the bronze medal with the Soviet team.
Coaching career
In 1979 he had to end his active career because of a back injury. He initially coached lower-class clubs in the Soviet Union and was assistant coach at Dynamo Kiev in the 1980s, and in 1993 he was head coach at Dynamo. In 1994 he coached the Guinean national team , then he coached metalist Kharkiv and Tawrija Simferopol, among others .
On December 26, 2012, Fomenko was appointed the new head coach of the Ukrainian national team , succeeding Oleh Blochin .
After the early exit of the Ukrainians as the last of Group C in the preliminary round of the European Championship 2016 , Fomenko's expiring contract was not extended any further and shortly thereafter the previous assistant coach Andrij Shevchenko was promoted to head coach.
