The FK Metalurh Saporischschja ( Ukrainian ФК Металург Запоріжжя , Russian Металлург Запорожье , Metallurg Saporoschje ) is a Ukrainian football club from the industrial center Saporischschja .

history

The association was founded in 1935 as Stahl Zaporischschja and received its current name in 1950.

In 1951 and 1952 the club won the cup final of the Ukrainian Soviet Republic .

With the independence of Ukraine, an independent league, the Wyschtscha Liha, was founded . Metalurh Zaporischschja was one of the founding members and played first class until 2011. In 2002 the club finished fourth and took part in the European Cup for the first time , but failed in the first round at Leeds United . The following year Metalurh finished the season as the table penultimate on a relegation place, but due to the bankruptcy of PFK Oleksandrija , the club remained in the league. In the 2010/11 season , the team finished 16th and last place in the table and thus rose for the first time in its history in the second-rate Perscha Liha . After only one year in the second division Metalurh Zaporizhia reached second place and rose again to the Premjer-Liha, from which the club had to relegate immediately as bottom of the table. Due to the 16th and last place in the table in the 2012/13 season , Metalurh Zaporizhzhja rose after only one year of first class athletic in the Perscha Liha. Since the seventh-placed Krywbas Krywyj Rih withdrew from the Premjer-Liha because of financial difficulties and the runner-up of the Perscha Liha Stal Alchevsk was not admitted to the top division, the Metalurh Zaporizhia will also play in the Premjer-Liha in the 2013/14 season .

The greatest success in the club's recent history was reaching the national cup final in 2006 , which the club lost 1-0 to Dynamo Kiev . Metalurh qualified for the European Cup , but Panathinaikos Athens won 1-0 in Ukraine after a 1-1 draw in Athens.
