For Ukraine it was the only newcomer to participate in a European Championship finals and, after the 2006 World Cup, the second participation in a major tournament. Like co-hosts Poland, Ukraine were eliminated in the preliminary round, but were able to achieve their first victory in a final round in their first game.
qualification
As the host of the European Championship, the Ukrainian team automatically qualified for the finals.
Contingent
For the European Football Championship 2012 , national coach Oleh Blochin announced a preliminary roster of 26 players on May 8 , from which a goalkeeper and two field players had to be deleted by May 29. The naming of the goalkeepers was problematic, as regular goalkeepers Oleksandr Schowkowskyj and Andrij Dykan were injured, and Oleksandr Rybka also tested positive for doping and was therefore suspended. The most experienced players in the squad were record national player Anatolij Tymoschtschuk and record scorer Andrij Shevchenko as well as Oleh Husjew , Ruslan Rotan , Artem Milewskyj and Andrij Voronin , who also played at the 2006 World Cup .
At the beginning of May 2012, the contract with national coach Oleh Blochin was extended until the end of the 2014 World Cup . In September he announced his resignation as national coach.
The final roster was announced on May 28th:
