Contingent
On May 29, 2012, the final squad for the 2012 European Football Championship was named. The most experienced players were Giorgos Karagounis and Kostas Katsouranis , who were also used to win the 2004 title and the 2008 qualifying round. The 36-year-old Nikos Liberopoulos was surprisingly nominated, who had already announced his resignation from the national team in 2009. Not in the squad was Angelos Charisteas , who scored the decisive goal to win the title in 2004 and was instrumental in the victory in the last qualifying game.

Quarter finals
Greece reached the quarter-finals for the second time, in which they met Germany, the group winners of Group B. Before the EM there were eight games against Germany, three of which ended in a draw and five were lost. They last met on March 28, 2001 in Athens as part of the 2002 World Cup qualification. In the 2: 4, Nikos Liberopoulos , Giorgos Karagounis and Miroslav Klose , who scored the goal for the meanwhile 2: 3, were involved from the current EM squads .
Klose, who scored 3-1 in the meantime, and Liberopoulos were also used when they met again, Karagounis was suspended due to the second yellow card received in the game against Russia.
The Greek team played with a mourning ribbon, since the former national coach Alketas Panagoulias , with whom the European Championship finals were reached in 1980, died on June 18, 2012.
