This article covers the English national football team at the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine .
England was able to qualify again after missing qualification in 2008 and participated for the eighth time.

England qualified for the European Championship in qualification group G , one of three "groups of five".

preparation
There were two test matches before the European Championship: on May 26th in Oslo against Norway (1-0, goalscorer Ashley Young ) and on June 2nd in London against Belgium (1-0, goalscorer Danny Welbeck ).

EM preliminary round
At the draw, the English were drawn into group D, for which the host Ukraine was set as the group head. France and Sweden were also drawn. England has an overall positive record against all group opponents. At the European Championships, however, the record against France and Sweden was negative (1 draw, 1 defeat, 1: 2 goals and 1 defeat, 1: 2 goals). Against Ukraine, which took part in a final round for the first time, there have been no previous European championships. Before the European Championship, England won 1-0 against Sweden on November 15, 2011. The last game against France before the European Championship was lost on November 17, 2010 with 1: 2 in London. The last game before the European Championship against Ukraine was lost on October 10, 2009 as part of the qualification for the 2010 World Cup with 0: 1.

Knockout round
For the first time since 1996 England was able to reach the quarter-finals as group winners and met Italy, the runner-up in Group C. Before that, both played against each other 22 times, with seven English wins, six draws and nine defeats. They only met once in a placement game , in the game for third place at the 1990 World Cup, which England lost 2-1. At a European Championship, both met in the group stage in 1980, with England losing 1-0. The last game between the two up to that point took place on March 27, 2002 in Leeds and ended 1: 2.

Squad
On May 16, the new team manager Roy Hodgson nominated the squad. Nine days later, he deleted the originally called third goalkeeper John Ruddy due to a broken finger and replaced him with Jack Butland . The most experienced players were Ashley Cole , Steven Gerrard , Frank Lampard , Wayne Rooney and John Terry who were also used in 2004 . Up until the nomination without international appearances, the aforementioned goalkeeper Jack Butland and midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were . Phil Jagielka (Everton), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Manchester City) and Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea) were named as possible successors . Phil Jagielka was then nominated for the injured Gareth Barry . The English squad is the only one that only has players from the domestic league. On May 31st, it was announced that Frank Lampard would be out with a hamstring injury, who will be replaced by Jordan Henderson. On June 3, Martin Kelly was nominated for Gary Cahill , as Cahill suffered a double broken jaw in the friendly against Belgium on June 2 . As the only player from the squad, substitute goalkeeper Butland was appointed to the squad of Team GB for the London Olympics, where he was the youngest player in the squad in all four games.
