Joleon Patrick Lescott (born August 16, 1982 in Birmingham ) is a former English football player . The Wolverhampton Wanderers trained central defender , who is also used sporadically in the wing position - usually on the left - was part of the English senior team from 2007 to 2013 . His brother, Aaron , who is more than three years older, is also a professional footballer, albeit only in lower-class leagues.

Athletic career

Wolverhampton Wanderers (1998-2006)

Birmingham-born Joleon Lescott attended the Four Dwellings School in the suburb of Quinton, west of the city, and was an Aston Villa fanatic from an early age . At the age of five he was seriously injured when a car hit him near his school and dragged him down the street - the scars are still clearly visible today, especially on his head and there on the hairline.

As a nearly 16-year-old talent, Lescott was drawn to the Wolverhampton Wanderers youth academy - in contrast to his brother Aaron, who was active at Villa, but did not get a chance there . The newcomer soon convinced with his very mature and serene appearing ideas on the central defender position, which also helped him to international matches in the English U-18 team. Three days before his 18th birthday he made his debut in the second division of the 2000/01 season in the A-team of the "Wolves" against Sheffield Wednesday and as a regular he won the club's internal award for best young professional twice in a row until 2002. He finally matured into a key player in the 2002/03 season, when he only missed a single game and was often the “tower in battle” as head of defense. In the three successful play-off games for promotion to the Premier League, "his" defense received only one goal.

The anticipation for the English elite class only lasted briefly. A serious knee injury ensured that the hopefuls waited in vain for his Premier League debut. His team could not compensate for the failure in defense, which also had to cope with the injury of goalkeeper Matt Murray , and went straight back to the Football League Championship . Slowly, Lescott worked his way back to past performances and after stable performances he agreed with the management of Wolverhampton Wanderers in October 2005 about a contract extension with a term of 2½ years. The fact that he left the Wolves after the end of the 2005/06 season was due to the fact that his shape was approaching that of 2003. His second division colleagues voted him into the "Team of the Season" at the end of the round and since the promotion was still missed, the club management in Wolverhampton accepted the tempting transfer offer from Everton FC in June 2006 in the amount of five million pounds - divided into an immediate payment of two million, further installments of the same total amount and subsequent success fees of one million pounds.

Everton FC (2006-2009)

After an intensive medical examination in Liverpool, which examined Lescott's previously damaged knee, the club change was perfect and after the "Toffees" had previously sold Per Krøldrup in January 2006 and then sent Matteo Ferrari back to AS Roma on loan , Lescott was one of four potential central defenders in the squad. Right away, the newcomer acclimatized to the defensive of Everton and there not only in the center of defense, but also often in the left full-back position . Among the new teammates he quickly developed a claim to leadership and was rewarded by them at the end of the 2006/07 season with the election of the best player of the previous round.

Rumors of an imminent move to Chelsea or even Real Madrid had been shattered during the breakthrough at the highest national level and in the following two years until the end of the 2008/09 season Lescott stayed with the "Toffees". With three goals in the first eight games of the 2007/08 season, he also briefly developed into a goalscorer and the "long-running hit" in defense - Lescott has played 129 games since his arrival as a left-back or at the side of Phil Jagielka or Joseph Yobo for Everton in series - especially made a good reputation in duels with opposing top strikers. In the spring of 2009, the up-and-coming and well-funded Manchester City expressed interest in a transfer deal, which Everton FC opposed to the public just as twice as it did to the subsequent request from Lescott himself in August 2009 - coach David Moyes even described Lescott's plan as " disgusting "(English:" disgusting "). The negotiation game ended on August 25, 2009, when Lescott signed a five-year contract with the Citizens and a transfer fee of £ 22-24 million flowed to Everton FC.

Manchester City (2009-2014)

Lescott was part of a large-scale investment project in Manchester that included "high-profile" Carlos Tévez from Manchester United and Emmanuel Adebayor from Arsenal FC. Lescott started his new team 18 times before a knee injury from a game against Chelsea in December 2009 put him on hold for two months and later in March 2010.

West Bromwich Albion (2014-2015)

For the 2014/15 season Lescott moved to West Bromwich Albion on a free transfer, where he received a two-year contract with the option of extension. After the Baggies did not concede six of the ten games with his participation, some fans demanded his return to the England team. His first and only goal for West Bromwich he scored on December 20, 2014 in the 3-2 loss to Queens Park Rangers , when he scored the interim 1-0.

Aston Villa (2015-2016)

On September 1, 2015, the last day of the transfer period, Lescott moved to league rivals Aston Villa , where he was awarded a two-year contract and thus returned to his hometown. With the Villans, however, he did not manage to keep the class in the following year and he ended up, with a yield of only 17 points, far behind in the last place in the Premier League table.

English national team

Lescott acted early on on an international level for English junior teams and so he came into play for the U-18, U-20 and U-21 selections. After his successful debut season at Everton, he was on May 25, 2007 from the 75th minute for the substituted Nicky Shorey in the national B team, which beat Albania 3-1 in Burnley .

On October 13, 2007, Lescott made his senior national team debut against Estonia under Steve McClaren when he came on for Rio Ferdinand in the second half . Previously, he was appointed to the “Three Lions” squad for the first time for the European Championship qualifiers against Israel and Russia . After the failed qualification for the Euro 2008 - he was in the starting eleven in the decisive defeats against Russia (1: 2) and Croatia (2: 3) - Lescott also came under the new coach Fabio Capello in 2008 and 2009 sporadic appearances, although not as a regular player, as the Italian preferred John Terry , Rio Ferdinand and Matthew Upson in central defense . Lescott was in the squad for the 2012 European Football Championship and was used in the first group game against France. As a defender he scored the first goal for his team when he headed a free kick from Gerrard in the 30th minute to make it 1-0. His last international match was on March 26, 2013 in a 1-1 draw against Montenegro in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil .
