Joseph Phillip Yobo (born September 6, 1980 in Kono , Rivers ) is a retired Nigerian soccer player .
Career
Yobo began his professional football career at Michellin Port-Harcourt . In 1998 he was signed by Standard Liège , where he made his professional debut in 2000. In 2001 the defensive all-rounder moved to Olympique Marseille . From there it was first loaned to CD Tenerife . Without ever having played a game for Tenerife, he was loaned out again the following season, this time to Everton FC .
At Everton he was able to convince and was signed in the summer of 2003 for almost six million euros. He's been a regular since his arrival and never missed a minute of the game in the 2006/07 season . In 2006 he extended his contract with Everton until 2010, from May 2009 until 2014.
On August 31, 2010, Yobo was loaned to the Turkish first division club Fenerbahçe Istanbul for one year . A purchase option was drawn from Fenerbahçe after a year. Shortly before the transfer deadline on September 5, 2011, Yobo was loaned to Turkish first division club Fenerbahçe Istanbul for 700,000 euros and for another year.
Since January 30, 2014 he has been playing on loan at the English first division club Norwich City .
At the end of August 2014, his contract with Fenerbahçe was terminated.
National team
Yobo has played 100 times in the Nigerian national soccer team . He played his first game in May 2001 against the Zambian national soccer team . He is currently the top international player in his home country Nigeria . On June 25, 2014, he made his 100th international match against Argentina in the group game at the 2014 World Cup . After the World Cup, he announced his resignation from the national team.

Others
He is a brother of the former national player Albert Yobo , who played in Austria and Germany for a year and a half. In July 2008, Joseph Yobo's younger brother Norum was kidnapped by kidnappers in Port Harcourt . He was released after two weeks.
Yobo founded the Joseph Yobo Foundation in 2007, which helps children in Nigeria to graduate from school or university. In 2007 he had already distributed over 300 scholarships. He has also founded a football academy in Ogoni and runs a football camp together with Everton Lagos FC .
