Nicholas "Nicky" Shorey (born February 19, 1981 in Romford , London Borough of Havering , England ) is an English football player .

Athletic career

Club career

Shorey began his athletic career when he joined the Leyton Orient youth division in 1998 . He then came in the seasons 1999/2000 and 2000/01 occasionally to appearances in the first team and thereby attracted the attention of coach Alan Pardew, who was then active at Reading FC . For a transfer fee of 25,000 pounds Shorey finally moved on February 10, 2001, the club and quickly developed into a permanent part of the team at Reading FC.

On August 1, 2006, Shorey extended his contract with Reading FC until June 2009 and then performed well in his first Premier League season in 2006/07 - the club's supporters voted him “Player of the Season” in the end. in second place. This made him recommended for more ambitious first division clubs, where he was mainly associated with a move to Newcastle United or West Ham United . On August 4, 2007, Steve Coppell announced as the coach of Reading FC that Shorey had turned down a contract extension offer for improved salaries. However, Shorey denied speculation about an early move with an official statement that he intended not to leave Reading FC. On August 7, 2008 Shorey signed a three-year contract with league rivals Aston Villa . The clubs involved kept silent about the transfer fee.

After Shorey had been in the starting lineup of Aston Villa at the beginning of the 2009/10 season, he lost this position after signing Stephen Warnock . At the end of November 2009, he then moved on loan to the second division Nottingham Forest and completed nine league games there by the end of January, in which his new team was undefeated. In early February 2010, Fulham FC announced Shorey's commitment. He was on loan from Aston Villa until the end of the season.

On August 9, 2010, Shorey signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year at West Bromwich Albion .

English national team

Shorey's good performance at the club in the 2006/07 season initially meant that the supporters of Reading FC demanded that their left defender be considered in the English national team by regularly intoning “Shorey for England”. As the season progressed, Shorey, which had not yet been included in the English selection, found greater acceptance in the national media.

Finally, Shorey came on May 25, 2007 in Turf Moor - usually the home ground of Burnley FC - in the English B selection against Albania and was in the 3-1 win in the starting line-up before he was substituted after 73 minutes. Quite a few experts then recommended that Shorey should be promoted to the senior national team and Steve McClaren nominated him on May 26, 2007 for the upcoming friendly against Brazil and for the subsequent European Championship qualifier against Estonia . In the 1-1 draw against Brazil at the new Wembley Stadium , he made his debut as England national team player on June 1, 2007, but despite good reviews from experts, Shorey wasn't even on the bench during the game against Estonia.

His second international game completed Shorey on August 22, 2007 again in Wembley in the 1: 2 defeat against Germany .
