English games
England entered this European Championship with the hope of winning an international football title , as it did at the 1966 World Cup . However, the English national team was in a form low. So they were eliminated in the preliminary round at the 1992 European Championships and failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup .
Preliminary round
In the preliminary round, the hosts met Scotland , the Netherlands and Switzerland . Although they lost a victory in the opening game against Switzerland, the remaining two group games were won confidently, so that England qualified as group winners for the quarter-finals

Quarter finals
England met Spain in the quarter-finals , as no goal was scored during regular time or extra time, the penalty shoot-out had to decide. Here the English were able to qualify for the semi-finals thanks to a brilliant save by David Seaman, who was able to save a penalty.

Semifinals
The semifinals were played against Germany . The English took the lead after three minutes when Alan Shearer headed the ball into the net from a corner. The German team came under pressure, but they managed to equalize in the 16th minute, so that it was 1: 1 by the end. The extra time - especially the first 15 minutes - went down as one of the most dramatic in European Championship history: The English hit the post, Gascoigne slipped past the ball two meters from the German goal line, a goal by the Germans was not recognized. Since no goal was scored in extra time, the penalty shoot-out had to decide the finalist. As in the 1990 World Cup , the English team could not prevail and lost to the eventual European champions.
