Steven Brian Stone (born August 20, 1971 in Gateshead , England ) is a former English football player .
Nottingham Forest
Steve Stone started his football career at Nottingham Forest . Forest played at this time in the First Division and reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup against Liverpool in the 1988/89 season . The Hillsborough disaster occurred , which is one of the greatest accidents in international football. However, Stone only started his professional career in the following season. In 1991 he reached the final of the FA Cup with his team. In front of 80,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium , Nottingham lost 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur around Paul Gascoigne and Gary Lineker . Steve Stone experienced the high point of his career after the season in which he was appointed to the squad of the English national team for the 1996 European Football Championship in England. In the 1996/97 season Forest rose again from the second division. After another direct resurgence, the first direct relegation followed in 1998/99. Steve Stone then decided to change clubs and signed a contract with Aston Villa .
Aston Villa
In his first season 1999/2000 he reached the final of the FA Cup with his new club. Stone, who was only substituted on in the 79th minute, suffered his second defeat in the final after 1991. The decisive goal in the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea was scored by Roberto Di Matteo . Stone's teammates were u. a. Gareth Southgate and Gareth Barry . For the 2002/03 season he moved to Birmingham again after three years , this time to Portsmouth FC .
Portsmouth FC
His team played in the Football League Championship this season , but after a very strong season they made it to the Premier League with 29 wins in 46 games and first place in the table. After 13th place in the Premier League 2003/04 , he finished with his team in the Premier League 2004/05 in 16th place. After this season he signed the last contract of his career and moved to Leeds United .
Leeds United
The now 34-year-old Steve Stone came in his first year in Leeds due to injuries only at the end of the season to a few appearances. United reached No. 5, but missed promotion in the play-offs. In the 2006/07 season Stone was able to score his second goal for his team against West Bromwich Albion , but decided to end his career after recurring injuries in December 2006.
English national team
Steve Stone made his debut in the national team in October 1995 in a friendly against Norway . He scored his first goal in his second international match in a 3-1 home win against Switzerland . For the 1996 European Football Championship in England , Stone was appointed to the squad by coach Terry Venables and was used in the first two group matches against Switzerland and Scotland. In the quarter-finals he was substituted on in extra time against Spain and moved into the semi-finals after a 4: 3 on penalties. There, his team failed on penalties against Germany without his being used. After Venables resigned after the European Championship, Steve Stone was no longer appointed to the national team by his successor Glenn Hoddle .
