(4138) Kalchas was discovered on September 19, 1973 by Cornelis Johannes van Houten , Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels . It is assigned to the Lagrangian point L4.

The asteroid was named after Kalchas , the mythical seer of the Greeks during the Trojan War .
