Glen McLeod Cooper Johnson (born August 23, 1984 in London ) is a former English football player . The offensively oriented, tricky and quick right full-back , who was also used on the wing in midfield , played 54 international matches for England. His greatest successes were winning the English championship and the league cup with Chelsea in 2005, winning the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008 and winning the league cup with Liverpool again in 2012 .

Athletic career

West Ham United (2000-2003)

Born in the London district of Greenwich , Glen Johnson was part of the renowned youth academy of West Ham United from 2000 at the age of 15 . On August 1, 2001, the almost 17-year-old signed his first professional contract with the Hammers . It was not enough to play in the "first team" in the 2001/02 season; his probation options were limited to the reserve team.

On October 17, 2002 loaned to his club for a total of seven weeks to rivals Millwall FC in the second-rate Football League Championship . There Johnson played his first league game against Norwich City after two days , which was lost 3-1. In the new year he ran for West Ham for the first time in the A-team and was substituted on for midfielder Édouard Cissé in the 2: 4 defeat by Charlton Athletic . Ultimately, he came in the remaining games of the 2002/03 season on a total of 15 league appearances and thus established himself on the right full-back position. With his signature on a new four-year contract, the two parties initially documented the desired long-term cooperation, but the 2-2 draw against Birmingham City , which resulted in relegation to the second division, was his last appearance for West Ham United.

Chelsea FC (2003-2006)

On July 15, 2003, Johnson signed a contract with Chelsea , which paid him six million pounds. Two weeks after his debut for the " Blues " against MŠK Žilina , Johnson scored his first goal in the second leg of the Champions League qualifier. Shortly before this goal, he also made his debut in the championship at the new club and won 2-1 at Liverpool with Chelsea . With 63 competitive games in the first two years and two titles in 2005 (English championship and league cup), he was instantly a fixture, even though he was only substituted for Joe Cole after 81 minutes in the league cup final against Liverpool (3-2) was.

Chelsea defended the Premier League title in the following season, but Johnson had already lost his place permanently to Paulo Ferreira - the versatile Geremi Njitap also provided further competition on the right full-back position. Only four league appearances in the 2005/06 season meant that he fell short of the minimum number for a championship medal. As a result of the moderate sporting perspective, his club loaned him to Portsmouth FC under coach Harry Redknapp in June 2006 for a full season .

Portsmouth FC (2006-2009)

After the loan expired, he first returned to Chelsea, and since Geremi had meanwhile moved to Newcastle United , the competition appeared smaller. He played only three competitive games for Chelsea in August 2007 before signing a four-year contract with Portsmouth FC on August 31, 2007 - the last day of the summer transfer window. According to media reports, the transfer fee was four million pounds. In Portsmouth Johnson was, unlike before under José Mourinho in London, straight away a regular as a right-back and the successes were not lacking. The 9th place in the league from the previous year Johnson not only improved by one place with "Pompey", but he was also in the team that won the FA Cup on May 17, 2008 after a 1-0 final win against the second division Cardiff City .

The following season 2008/09 was only moderately successful for Portsmouth FC when three different coaches were employed. Johnson was initially under Redknapp as usual as a strong, attacking full-back in the 3–5–2 system (" wing-back ") and after a transition phase with ex- assistant coach Tony Adams under his successor Paul Hart temporarily changed to a midfield role . Johnson scored three goals in 37 compulsory appearances - all of them with the weaker left foot - including a long-range hit on November 22, 2008 against Hull City , which the TV show " Match of the Day " later voted goal of the year. At the end of the round, Johnson was voted best player in both the Premier League's “Team of the Season” and within the club. He had apparently refuted rumors of an upcoming nine million transfer to Liverpool FC in January 2009 by signing a new 4½-year contract and renewed commitment to Portsmouth FC in April 2009.

Liverpool FC (2009-2015)

Regardless of this, competition for Glen Johnson began after Portsmouth's CEO Peter Storrie announced a “substantial offer” on June 13, 2009 and Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City as possible candidates. The choice fell nine days later on the " Reds " from Liverpool. The transfer volume was around £ 18 million; Part of the deal was also the outstanding seven million payment in the opposite direction for Peter Crouch , in which the Liverpool club management "signaled goodwill". Johnson signed a four-year deal on Merseyside . Three days after his Liverpool Premier League debut against Tottenham Hotspur (1: 2), he did well in his home debut against Stoke City (4: 0) on August 19, 2009, scored his first goal and received the “ Man of the Match ". A torn inner ligament in his right knee at the end of 2009 resulted in a two-month forced break before Johnson reported back in March 2010.

Under new coach Roy Hodgson , Johnson initially continued in Liverpool's starting XI, but minor injuries and form weaknesses meant that coach Hodgson publicly criticized his performances. Immediately later, after recovering from a groin injury against ex-club West Ham United, he scored the first Premier League goal of the current season. However, the first signs of improvement were the coaching change to Kenny Dalglish , who often used him in the left-back position. The defensive network was particularly improved in the 1-0 win against Chelsea . Its resurgence ultimately led to a contract renewal, although the term of the new contract was not disclosed.

In the 2011/12 season, Johnson again drew attention to the ex-club from Chelsea when, in late November 2011, at Stamford Bridge shortly before the end of the game, he brought about the decision to a 2-1 victory with a single action. On February 26, 2012 he helped Liverpool to win their first title since 2006 by beating Cardiff City in the final in the League Cup . He played all 120 minutes of play including extra time and he was one of the successful shooters in the final penalty shoot-out. In the following season 2012/13 he missed only two Premier League games under the new coach Brendan Rodgers , at the same time surpassed the 150 league stakes mark for the "Reds" and scored two goals in mandatory encounters - against FK Homel in Europe League and in the domestic league at the ex-club from West Ham. The following year Liverpool suddenly counted among the title contenders in the Premier League, but ultimately failed in the long-distance duel with Manchester City and became runner-up . Johnson's performances were classified as changeable and the defensive was considered too unstable in the title race. Especially in a groundbreaking game shortly before the end of the season against Crystal Palace , when Liverpool lost a 3-0 lead in the closing stages (final score 3: 3), Johnson was one of the criticized players. In May 2014, speculation increased about possible modifications on the defensive by coach Rodgers, who could also fall victim to Johnson. Even so, he stayed one more season but made only 19 league games in his final season at Liverpool. Jonson declined an offer to extend the contract.

Stoke City (2015-2018)

At the beginning of July 2015 it became public that Stoke City would sign the then 30-year-old for two years with the option of an additional season. In April 2017 the association was extended by one year. After the club's relegation at the end of the 2017/18 season , Johnson, like his teammate Stephen Ireland , was not offered a contract extension from new coach Gary Rowett . After six months without a club, Johnson announced his immediate retirement in January 2019. The reason he named his dwindling physical requirements for professional sport.

English national team

While Johnson was still active for the U-21 selection , he made his debut on November 18, 2003 against Denmark for the English national team , where he replaced the injured Gary Neville on the right full- back position after 16 minutes . His fifth appearance for the " Three Lions " against the same opponent almost two years later was his last until March 2008, and he lost his place as Neville's substitute to Luke Young - Steve McClaren waived from the summer of 2006 on Johnson's services completely. Only his successor Fabio Capello called him back to the squad at the beginning of 2008.

Under Capello, Johnson established himself in the regular team on the right wing with 15 international matches in 2008 and 2009 and consistently played the successful qualifying matches for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . On May 24, 2010, he scored his first international goal in a friendly against Mexico (3-1). Like his club-mate Steven Gerrard, he played the first three games over the entire season at the final round of the World Cup before he was substituted in the 4-1 knockout round defeat by Germany . Two years later, Johnson was also in the squad for Euro 2012 in Ukraine and Poland . As in South Africa, he played all four games, with England knocked out in the quarter-finals - now Italy ended up on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes, with Johnson not having to take the penalty.

Capello was followed by Roy Hodgson in 2012 and Johnson was still an integral part of the English team, although the collaboration between Capello and Johnson in Liverpool two years earlier had not been without complications. If he didn't have to take a break due to injuries or suspensions, he was now in the main lineup on the right side of the defense and after successfully qualifying for the World Cup, Hodgson nominated him for the World Cup in Brazil .
