history

1960s

The first football match broadcast was the championship match between Arsenal FC and Liverpool FC in August 1964. The audience was only 20,000 because BBC2 could only be received in London at the time. In December 1964, the station was broadcast in the Midlands and could be received by two million people. Initially, the broadcast format had problems. The English football clubs did not want to sign a television deal with the BBC because they believed the number of viewers in the stadiums might decrease. In 1965 a contract was negotiated, according to which no game could be shown live. This contract lasted until 1983. In 1969 the first game was broadcast in color. Liverpool FC played against West Ham United .

1970s and 1980s

In the 1970s, Match of the Day became the BBC's most successful program with over 12 million viewers. In 1970 the goal of the year and the month were added to the program. The first slow motion came in 1971. In 1979-1983, the rights to broadcast the games on Saturday had to be given to ITV . From 1983 the rights were shared with ITV. In December 1983, the first live game from the top English division was shown. Manchester United beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-2. In 1985, an English league cup final was broadcast for the first time.

1990s and 2000s

In 1992 all goals in a round were shown for the first time. In the early 1990s the BBC lost the rights to the English European Cup matches. In 1993 the rights came back, but the FA Cup games had to be given up. So Match of the Day had to be limited to international appearances by English teams and the Premier League . 2001 the BBC lost the broadcasting rights of the Premier League to the eternal competitor ITV . During these three years, FA Cup summaries, England national football team matches and English teams UEFA Cup matches were shown. Since 2006 Match of the Day has been showing games of the English Premier League again. In 2007, Jacqui Oatley was the first woman to host Match of the Day. The show is hosted by Gary Lineker . Some other "football experts" who appear regularly on the show: Alan Hansen , Lee Dixon , Alan Shearer and Mark Lawrenson .
