Charles Joseph John "Joe" Hart (born April 19, 1987 in Shrewsbury ) is an English football goalkeeper . He was an England international and has been under contract with Tottenham Hotspur since August 2020 . With his former club Manchester City, he won the English championship twice and the FA Cup once .

Club career

Training (until 2006)

Hart began his football career at Shrewsbury Town . As an eleven-year-old student, he drove to the club's away games in the first team's team bus. He made his debut in the first team at the age of 17 in the championship game on April 20, 2004 in the Football Conference against FC Gravesend & Northfleet . He was the second goalkeeper at the time and did not play another league match until April 2005. By the end of the 2004/05 season, he came in six games of Football League Two , in which Shrewsbury Town had now promoted, to use and conceded four goals. In the following season Hart ran as a regular goalkeeper in all 46 league games for the club, where he had to accept 55 goals.

On May 22, 2006, Hart signed a contract with Manchester City . The transfer fee was originally £ 600,000 plus an additional fee of £ 500,000 once Hart was to play his first competitive game for England's senior team, plus other amounts depending on the number of his appearances up to a total of £ 1.5 million.

He played his first Premier League game for Manchester City on October 14, 2006 in a goalless draw with Sheffield United when the first two goalkeepers, Andreas Isaksson and Nicky Weaver, were injured. In January 2007, his club loaned him for six league games to the third division team Tranmere Rovers , in which Hart had to accept eight goals. He returned to Manchester City in early February.

When Blackpool FC had goalkeeper worries in April 2007 after the injury-related failure of their three goalkeepers Rhys Evans , Paul Rachubka and Lewis Edge , Hart moved to the English coastal city on loan. He played his first game for Blackpool FC in its 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town on April 9, 2007. Overall, Blackpool FC won all five games with Hart and secured a place for the play-offs for promotion to the second rate Football League Championship .

In the 2007/08 season , Hart ousted the Swedish national goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson as Manchester City goalkeeper. From the eighth day of the game, he was used regularly and he played 26 first division games. For the 2008/09 season he took over jersey number 1 from Isaksson after he had switched to Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven . With two penalty kicks saved on penalties against FC Midtjylland , Hart also secured his club a place in the main round of the UEFA Cup . But when the experienced Shay Given was signed by Newcastle United for the winter break , Hart pushed him straight back to the bench. In order to give him more match practice again, Hart was awarded to league rivals Birmingham City in the summer of 2009 , where he should compete with Northern Irish goalkeeper Maik Taylor . City in turn secured a suitable replacement for Hart with Stuart Taylor from Aston Villa .

Hart started with a 1-0 loss to Manchester United ; his rival Maik Taylor remained clean against Manchester City. Alex McLeish decided nevertheless for Hart, who then played a decisive role in the fact that the team managed a series of twelve games without defeat, which meant a club record in the top English division. Hart played himself in the circle of the English senior team and impressed the professional world in the 0-0 draw against Chelsea in December 2009 not only with “sharp judgment and reflexes, three extraordinary rescue acts (...), but also with one Fearlessness ”during a defensive action against the outstretched foot of Salomon Kalou . From then on, Hart earned a reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League; he also won the “Premier League Golden Glove” award in the 2010/11, 2011/12, and 2012/13 seasons. In addition, there were the first big titles: first he won the FA Cup in 2011 , where he once again remained clean in the 1-0 final victory over Stoke City . The following year he helped Manchester City secure the English championship for the first time in 44 years with a 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers .

Hart's form temporarily waned in the 2012/13 season. He was once again in an FA Cup final, which was unexpectedly lost 1-0 to underdog Wigan Athletic with a late conceded goal in stoppage time. The title defense of the English championship and failed hard landing with Manchester City significantly behind local rivals Manchester United in the second rank . In the 2013/14 season, the new coach Manuel Pellegrini relied more often on the second goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon , who was then used in almost all league cup encounters - in the 3-1 final win against AFC Sunderland , Hart was only on the bench. After Pantilimon's departure to final opponent Sunderland in the summer of 2014, Hart's position as regular goalkeeper in the league was consolidated again and with two saved penalties in the 2015/16 Champions League season against Raffael and Zlatan Ibrahimović , he drew attention at the European level. Like two years before, he made little contribution to the new league cup victory in 2016, did not play a game in the current competition and in the final against Liverpool FC his representative Willy Caballero secured victory on penalties. After Pep Guardiola took over as coach for the 2016/17 season, he no longer played a sporting role at Manchester City. Shortly before the end of the transfer deadline, he moved to Serie A club FC Turin on August 31, 2016 .

In July 2017, Hart moved to West Ham United on loan .

Burnley FC (2018-2020)

Hart moved to Burnley FC in August 2018 . Here he was number 1 in goal until the turn of the year, but after the team had only scored 12 points from 19 games, he was replaced by Tom Heaton , with whom Burnley was still able to secure the class. After Heaton's departure, head coach Sean Dyche relied on the younger Nick Pope in the 2019/20 season , who ended up playing the second most frequently to zero in the league. Hart, on the other hand, was only allowed to play in the national cup competitions, from which the team was eliminated early, and left Burnley at the end of his contract, which expired on June 30, 2020.

Tottenham Hotspur

In August 2020, the keeper moved to league competitor and European Cup participant Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer , with whom he signed a two-year contract. With the "Lilywhites" he is to compete with Paulo Gazzaniga for the post of the representative of the goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris .

English national team

During his time at Shrewsbury Town , Hart was appointed to the English U-19 national team, for which he played his first international match against Poland in October 2005. In total, Hart ran five times for this team, but missed the qualification for the U-19 European Football Championship 2006 in Poland.

In 2007 Hart played his first game for the English U-21 national team in their 5-0 victory over Slovakia . Once at the 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Championship nor Scott Carson had guarded the gates and did not come hard to use, then he played regularly for the English U-21 team and was their first-choice goalkeeper at the 2009 European Championships . The English made it into the final of the competition. Hart became a "tragic hero" when he converted a penalty himself in the semifinals against Sweden after a 3: 3 after extra time on penalties, saved another and received a yellow card, which he was suspended for the final.

Finally, Hart was called up by national coach Fabio Capello for the friendlies against the USA and Trinidad and Tobago in the English senior team. After sitting on the bench against the USA for 90 minutes, he made his senior international debut on June 1, 2008 against Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain . Hart was substituted on for David James at half- time and remained clean in the 3-0 win. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , he was part of the English squad, but was not used as the third goalkeeper. During the qualification phase for the European Championship 2012, Hart was named as the goalkeeper of the national team for the EM. Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson once described Hart as the best English goalkeeper in the past 20 years.

At the Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine , Hart was instrumental in ensuring that England reached the quarter-finals. With more than 14 impressive rescue operations in the group stage, he was able to excel more often than any other goalkeeper in the tournament. In the duel of the last eight teams against Italy he was again unbeaten including extra time, but without a chance on penalties - Riccardo Montolivo alone shot the ball next to the goal he was guarding.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was again the first goalkeeper. In a disappointing England tournament, which ended with the off after the first round, he played the first two group games against Italy (1: 2) and Uruguay (also 1: 2) before coach Hodgson in the meaningless game against him Costa Rica against Ben Foster exchanged. On the way to qualifying without loss points for the Euro 2016 in France , Hart was able to successfully assert himself as "Number 1". At the end of March 2015 he completed his 50th international match for the "Three Lions" in Italy (1: 1) and was ultimately also nominated for the final tournament.

At the Euro 2016 in France , Hart was also in goal in all four games. In the 1: 2 defeat in the round of 16 against the EM newcomer Iceland Hart was given decisive complicity at 1: 2 in the 18th minute. He had previously been criticized for a mistake in the second group game against Wales.

He was not nominated for the 2018 World Cup .
