Riccardo Montolivo (born January 18, 1985 in Caravaggio ) is a former Italian football player . He was under contract with AC Milan from 2012 to 2019 .

Career

From the age of 15 to 18, Montolivo played in the youth of Atalanta Bergamo . In season 2003/04 he ran for the first team in Serie B and the following season in the Serie A on. He made his debut on September 12, 2004 (1st matchday) in a 2-2 home game against US Lecce ; he scored his first goal on October 23, 2004 (7th matchday) in a 2-2 home game against Cagliari Calcio .

At the start of the 2005/06 season , Montolivo moved to league rivals Fiorentina and completed two seasons a. a. at the side of Luca Toni . He later became team captain .

For the 2012/13 season , AC Milan signed Montolivo on a free transfer. He signed a contract that was valid until June 30, 2016. For the 2013/14 season he took over the captaincy from the Fiorentina exchanged Massimo Ambrosini . In July 2019, he left the club after seven years on a free transfer. In November of the same year he then announced the end of his career.

National team

After playing for the U15 , U18 , U19 and U21 national teams, Montolivo made his debut on October 17, 2007 under coach Roberto Donadoni in the senior national team , who played a friendly against the South African selection in Siena with 2: 0 won. Shortly before the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Montolivo suffered a broken shin in a friendly against Ireland in a duel with Alex Pearce . So he fell out for the World Cup. Since this injury, Montolivo has not been able to find its way back to its old level and has been nominated again and again, but was only used irregularly. His last international match so far was against Israel on September 5, 2017 . He has not been nominated since then.

Montolivo's mother comes from Ascheberg in Schleswig-Holstein , which is why he speaks German and is a German citizen . In his youth he regularly spent the summer with his grandparents in Heidkate on the Baltic Sea . In Italy it is therefore often called "Il Tedesco" (the German).
