Curriculum vitae and spiritual career

John Sung grew up in a devout Methodist family and came to the Christian faith at the age of 9. In 1920, at the age of 19, he went to America with his father's disapproval and studied at Wesley University in Ohio and later at Ohio State University and Union Theological Seminary . After about five years of study, he graduated with the following academic titles: Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy. He was an expert in chemistry.

At Union Theological Seminary, liberal scholars such as B. Dr. van Dusen and Dr. HE Fosdick. John Sung lost his Christian faith here and turned to eastern religions and philosophies, e.g. B. Lao-tse. Then he was invited to an evangelism and was deeply impressed by the power and authority of prayer and preaching. John Sung began to look for this power in Christian life pictures. On New Year's Eve 1927 he experienced his awakening because of the biblical phrase "God rejects the wisdom of this world" from 1 Cor. 1:19. After some time of fighting, conversion followed. He then burned his liberal theological books. But he was so over-studied that he was even treated in a psychiatric clinic for a while. Six months later, John Sung was released on condition that he leave the United States.

On board the steamer that brought him back to China, he threw all his diplomas and training certificates overboard, except for his doctoral degree, which he wanted to show his father. From now on he only wanted to devote himself to evangelism in China. He was then for years one of China's most powerful evangelists in the revival that began in 1927. At times he also showed healings of faith. He married Yü-mei, the girl he was engaged to. On August 18, 1944, he died after a long illness and several operations. He was buried by the great martyr of China Wang Ming-Tao , who was his personal friend.
