Tobias Albertine Maurits "Toby" Alderweireld (born March 2, 1989 in Wilrijk , Antwerp ) is a Belgian football player . The defender is under contract with Tottenham Hotspur .
Career
In the club
Alderweireld played in Belgium for KFC Germinal Beerschot until 2004 . He then moved to the youth boarding school of the Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam . For the 2008/09 season he was included in the professional squad and made his league debut on January 18, 2009 in a 4-2 win against the NEC Nijmegen . He came on in the 82nd minute for Miralem Sulejmani . The same change came on February 26, 2009 in the UEFA Cup game against Fiorentina , in which Alderweireld made his international debut. Although he was rarely used in the further course of the season, his contract term was extended early to 2014. The following season he became a regular player, and together with his compatriot Jan Vertonghen 's central defense, since the previously set there Thomas Vermaelen at Arsenal had been sold. During the season, he scored his first Eredivisie goal against Heracles Almelo . At the end of the season he won the KNVB Cup with Ajax and was runner-up. As a result, Ajax took part in the Champions League ; there Alderweireld scored his first goal in a 2-0 win against AC Milan . Nevertheless, he was only third in the group stage with Ajax - as in the following year - and continued to play in the Europa League , in which the team was eliminated early. In the league he was twice in a row champions with Ajax, playing 26 and 29 games respectively.
On September 2, 2013 Alderweireld moved to Atlético Madrid , on September 1, 2014 on loan in the Premier League to Southampton FC . After the loan deal with Southampton FC had expired, Alderweireld remained loyal to the English top division and moved to Tottenham Hotspur for the 2015/16 season . The defender signed a contract with the Londoners until 2020. With the Spurs he reached the final of the Champions League season 2018/19 , which was lost to Liverpool . On December 20, 2019, Alderweireld surprisingly extended his contract prematurely until 2023, after he had previously been associated with a change several times.
In the national team
Alderweireld went through various Belgian youth national teams. He finally made his senior national team debut in 2009 in a friendly against Chile in Chiba, Japan . He played his first competitive game in the same year in a qualifying game for the 2010 World Cup against Estonia and lost it 2-0; the national team did not qualify for the World Cup. He also failed in qualifying for the Euro 2012 with the national team in the group stage.
The team with Alderweireld qualified for the 2014 World Cup as well as for the European Championship finals in France in 2016 . At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he was part of the Belgian squad and played in the first two group matches against Algeria and Russia, and was group winners with the team. Alderweireld also played in the round of 16 against the United States and in the quarter-finals against Argentina .
At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he played all five games in the tournament over the entire season as a member of the Belgian squad . In the round of 16 against Hungary he scored the first goal in the 4-0 win with a header. In the quarterfinals, the team was eliminated against Wales.
He took part in all qualifying matches of the Belgian national team for the 2018 World Cup , with one exception due to injury . At the World Cup itself, he was again part of the Belgian squad . Only in the group game against England , before which Belgium had already qualified for the round of 16, he was not used. The Belgian national team reached 3rd place in this tournament.
