David Benjamin James MBE (born August 1, 1970 in Welwyn Garden City ) is a former English soccer goalkeeper . He played his first international match for England's senior team in 1997 and was still guarding their goal at the 2010 World Cup at the age of 39. During his last active stint in India in 2014 with the Kerala Blasters , he took up duties as head coach for the first time .

Club career

Via Watford to Liverpool (1986-99)

James began his career as a goalkeeper at Watford FC . In 1986, after leaving school, he signed a contract as a youth player with the club. In 1989 he was drawn up for the first time for the Watford first team. In the same year he won the renowned FA Youth Cup with the offspring of the "Hornets" and played his first championship game for professional football on August 25, 1990 against Millwall FC - it was lost 2-1. The tall and athletic James quickly developed with some acrobatic defensive actions to a great support in Watford and at the end of the 1990/91 season he received the award for the best club player of the previous round after the secured second division relegation. By the end of the season 1991/92 he completed a total of 89 league appearances for Watford FC before the first season of the Premier League for Liverpool changed. 16 years later, his first professional club recognized him by being inducted into the club's Hall of Fame.

On August 16, 1992 James made his debut in the 1-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest for the "Reds", but after a total of 20 goals conceded in eleven games, coach Graeme Souness promoted him briefly behind the veteran Bruce Grobbelaar to the bench. In the following years James returned to the "first team" and won the league cup in 1995 , but critical voices accompanied him during his time at Liverpool FC, which in the 1990s rarely followed up on previous successes. The local media corrupted him with Steve McManaman , Jamie Redknapp and Robbie Fowler as "Spice Boys" - especially after the lost FA Cup final against Manchester United in 1996 - and after a few individual mistakes himself as "Calamity James" (calamity = Unheil, misery), a play on words with the name of the western heroine Calamity Jane . After signing Brad Friedel , James came under increasing pressure as a goalkeeper and after a total of 277 games he left the club for Aston Villa for £ 1.8m .

Short appearances: Aston Villa and West Ham United (1999-2004)

In the 1-0 away win of the "Villans" against Newcastle United , James got off to a good start in Birmingham and after a semi-final victory in the FA Cup against Bolton Wanderers , he moved into the English Cup final again. In the last final encounter in the old Wembley Stadium , however, his goalkeeping mistake was ultimately decisive for the victory of Chelsea . After just two years and 85 competitive games, James moved to West Ham United in the British capital for £ 3.5 million , where he again saw his former teammate from Watford FC as coach with Glenn Roeder .

Just a few days before the start of the 2001/02 season, James suffered a serious knee injury during an international match against the Netherlands on August 15, 2001, which delayed his start with the "Hammers" for three months. After this disastrous debut, the next setback followed in the 2002/03 season with relegation to the second division. James initially remained loyal to his new club before moving back to the Premier League at Manchester City in January 2004 , where he was to take over from David Seaman .

Manchester City (2004-06)

Just three days after signing, James made his Manchester debut under coach Kevin Keegan in a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers . In terms of sport, the initial phase was also bumpy here. James won only four of the remaining 17 games with "City", although he contributed to two successes saved penalties. After an upward trend in the following 2004/05 season, there was a "real final" against Middlesbrough FC for a UEFA Cup place on the last day of the game , which City had to make victorious. When the game was 1-1 with five minutes left, new coach Stuart Pearce ordered James into the attacking center after replacing midfielder Claudio Reyna with substitute goalkeeper Nicky Weaver - James' defender Franck Queudrue had only one good chance for James prevent with a hand game; however , Robbie Fowler missed the subsequent penalty for City . James spent yet another season with the "Citizens" before joining Portsmouth FC in August 2006 for £ 1.2million; The primary motivation here was less of a sporting nature, but rather was due to the greater proximity to London, where the children of the now 36-year-old had their home.

Portsmouth FC (2006-10)

In the south of England, James started promising with five clean sheets and with a goalless draw against Aston Villa on April 22, 2007 he broke David Seaman's Premier League record, which had previously remained 141 clean sheets. This was followed by other records as a record goalkeeper in terms of overall Premier League appearances and number of goals conceded; in January 2008, he was only the third Premier League player to hit the 500-game mark, after Gary Speed and Ryan Giggs .

With a final win against Welsh second division club Cardiff City , James won the FA Cup with Portsmouth FC in 2008 , where he won only his second major trophy in professional football thirteen years after winning the league cup with Liverpool. From February 14, 2009 to May 14, 2011, James was the record player in the Premier League (ousted by Ryan Giggs , he is now in fourth place with 572 appearances). After James was relegated to Portsmouth FC in the 2009/10 season, he was able to leave the club on a free transfer.

Bristol City (2010-12)

He justified his move to Bristol City by saying that being close to his family was very important to him, although he also had offers from Premier League clubs. Since he exceeded the mark of 30 missions in the 2010/11 season, the contract was extended for another year according to the agreement. However, the 2011/12 season was James' last in Bristol and after a total of 81 league games within two years, he was one of the eight players who were not offered a new contract in Bristol.

AFC Bournemouth and Iceland

After a short time in which James kept fit at Exeter City , he moved to third division AFC Bournemouth in late September 2012 . There the previous “number 1” Shwan Jalal had only conceded once in eight games and from then on the veteran who had been committed to the end of the 2012/13 season took over the goalkeeping position. In 2013 James briefly moved to Iceland to join ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar , but in the same year he moved back to his homeland in England. He ended his own career with the aim of acquiring a coaching license as well as taking on coaching activities for the fifth division Luton Town - the club to which he had attached in his childhood.

Kerala Blasters FC

James has been signed up for the Indian soccer team Kerala Blasters FC as a player and coach for the 2014 Indian Super League season . At the end of 2014, James ended his active career. Another coaching period under James followed in 2018, which ended prematurely after only nine points won from twelve games (and only one win).

English national team

James completed ten international matches for the English U-21s during his time at Watford before joining Liverpool on December 13, 1994 at home in Anfield for the English B team against the Irish B national team for Kevin Pressman was substituted on.

Under the then senior national coach Glenn Hoddle , James made his debut on March 29, 1997 at Wembley Stadium against Mexico and stayed in the 2-0 win at the side of his club-mates Steve McManaman and Robbie Fowler - as well as Stan Collymore and Jamie during the game Redknapp - harmless. For many years James was only a substitute behind goalkeeper David Seaman; between November 2000 and May 2002 he came to eight other internationals, but he was in the starting line-up in only two games. After increasing pressure on Seaman after the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , Sven-Göran Eriksson took another mistake against Macedonia as an opportunity to promote James to the new “number 1”; a position that he retained even after the relegation of his then-club West Ham United.

At the Euro 2004 in Portugal , James played all the games in the English selection, but the tide turned against him in September 2004 when he gave his place to Paul after a mistake in a 2-2 win against Austria in September 2004 Robinson of Tottenham Hotspur lost. James suffered further adversity when he came on as a substitute against Denmark at halftime on August 17, 2005, conceding four goals to make it 4-1 - England's biggest defeat in 25 years. Although he remained part of the squad, he could n't get past Robinson at the 2006 World Cup in Germany .

After the tournament, Eriksson's successor Steve McClaren sorted out James as well as the "veterans" David Beckham and Sol Campbell from the squad. It was not until August 22, 2007 that he made his comeback against Germany and played the second half in a 2-1 home defeat for Robinson. McClaren experimented continuously on the goalkeeping position during his tenure and tried out next to Robinson and James also Chris Kirkland , Ben Foster , and later Scott Carson and Robert Green - in the decisive qualifier for Euro 2008 Carson surprisingly stood between the posts and committed to the 2: 3 -Defeat crucial mistakes.

After almost three years, James was back in the starting line-up of the "Three Lions" against Switzerland on February 7, 2008 under new coach Fabio Capello . He kept the regular position until April 2009, when injury problems threw him back and he was now represented by Robert Green and Ben Foster .

At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , however, James slipped back into the first team in the group stage after the previously seeded Robert Green made a goalkeeping error in the first group game against the USA to make it 1-1.
