Kyriakos Papadopoulos ( Greek Κυριάκος Παπαδόπουλος ; born February 23, 1992 in Katerini ), nickname "Papa" , is a Greek football player . The central defender was most recently under contract with Hamburger SV .

Club career

Olympiacos Piraeus

Kyriakos Papadopoulos played in his hometown Katerini with GAS Svoronos in the amateur league and signed a three-year contract with Olympiacos Piraeus in the summer of 2007 . On December 2, 2007, he played at the age of 15 years and 283 days as a substitute in the 3-1 victory over Atromitos, his first appearance in the Super League . He is the youngest player to have played a competitive game in the highest Greek league and the youngest player to play for the Olympiakos U18 team. In September 2008, Papadopoulos signed a new three-year contract with Olympiakos.

FC Schalke 04

On June 23, 2010, he moved to FC Schalke 04 , where he signed a contract that initially ran until June 30, 2014. Papadopoulos played his first Bundesliga game for Schalke 04 on matchday 1 of the 2010/11 season against Hamburger SV . With Schalke 04 Papadopoulos won the DFB Cup and the DFL Supercup in 2011 . In the middle of the first half of the 2012/13 season, Papadopoulos injured his knee and was out for the rest of the season. During rehab, he suffered setbacks and missed the preparation for and the first games of the 2013/14 season . On December 15, 2013, he made his Bundesliga comeback after more than a year. By the end of the season he had three more missions. His contract ran until June 30, 2016.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

In order to gain match practice, Papadopoulos was loaned out to league rivals Bayer 04 Leverkusen for a year in August 2014 . He made his Bundesliga comeback on the first match day of the 2014/15 season for Bayer Leverkusen against Borussia Dortmund . He scored his first competitive goal for Bayer Leverkusen on October 22, 2014 in the Champions League victory over Zenit Saint Petersburg with the 2-0 goal. For the 2015/16 season he was finally committed and given a contract until June 30, 2020.

Via Leipzig to HSV

Papadopoulos at Hamburger SV, 2017

For the 2016/17 season Papadopoulos was awarded to the league competitor RB Leipzig . Also due to injuries, he was only used once in 15 possible mandatory games with a substitution in the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

After around four and a half months in Saxony, it was awarded to league rivals Hamburger SV in January 2017 . With strong performances - mostly alongside Mergim Mavraj , who was also obliged in winter - Papadopoulos made his contribution to keeping HSV up in his 15 appearances (two goals). He quickly became a crowd favorite, particularly because of his high level of identification with the club and his combative mentality.

For the 2017/18 season , HSV acquired the transfer rights and provided Papadopoulos with a contract that ran until June 30, 2020. He was named next to Mavraj by HSV coach Markus Gisdol as the deputy of team captain Gōtoku Sakai .

Under the coaches Markus Gisdol and Bernd Hollerbach , Papadopoulos was a regular in central defense. After sitting on the bench for the full season in the first game under Christian Titz , a 1: 2 home defeat against Hertha BSC on matchday 27, which caused HSV to slip to the bottom of the table on March 17, 2018 , he criticized public after the game. After apologizing to the coach and the team, Papadopoulos remained part of the professional squad. At the end of the season, the defender was relegated to the second division with HSV .

In the summer preparation for the 2nd Bundesliga 2018/19 , Papadopoulos suffered a serious knee injury, which made him sideline for eight months - and thus the entire first half of the season. He made his comeback in a 2-0 away win in the DFB Cup quarter-final against SC Paderborn 07 . There he was on the pitch for the entire duration of the game. In addition, due to the serious knee injury from the summer preparation, he only played one league game in the further course of the season (1: 2 home defeat against 1. FC Magdeburg ).

From the 2019/20 season , Dieter Hecking took over as coach for Hamburg. Under Hecking, Papadopulos only played over 90 minutes on the first day of the season. Another brief assignment followed. From then on, the central defense was formed by Rick van Drongelen and Gideon Jung . When Jung was out due to an injury, he was replaced by Timo Letschert , but Jonas David - unlike Papadopoulos - also played a role in Hecking's considerations. After the previously injured summer signing Ewerton returned to team training during the international break in October , Papadopoulos approached HSV with the wish to be able to leave the club in winter. He was then transferred to the second team in consultation with the sports management. Papadopoulos attended a game in the fourth division Regionalliga Nord and mid-December has been released . In mid-January 2020, he completed a trial training session with the Chinese first division club Shanghai Shenhua , but there was no commitment. According to his own statement, the contracts had already been negotiated, but he decided against a change due to the COVID-19 pandemic in China . At the beginning of February Papadopoulos returned to the training of the second team. Another regional league assignment followed until the leagues in Germany were interrupted in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic . From mid-May Papadopoulos wanted to keep fit with the reigning Greek champions PAOK Thessaloniki . Since the head coach Abel Ferreira was not privy to this project, he decided against Papadopoulos participating in training. At the end of May he joined the training of Panathinaikos Athens . His contract with HSV expired on June 30, 2020.

National team

Papadopoulos took part in the U19 European Championship in 2008 . He played in all three qualifiers against Moldova, the Netherlands and Russia in which Greece qualified for the preliminary round. In the preliminary round, Papadopoulos was at the center of the Greek defense with Vasilis Lambropoulos and was involved in ensuring that the Czech selection did not score a goal against his team. He was the youngest of the ten best players of the tournament listed on the UEFA website as the “Stars of Tomorrow”.

On November 19, 2008, he was the youngest debutant in the U21 national team.

On June 4, 2011, at the age of 19, he played his first international match for the Greek national team . He scored his first international goal in the European Championship qualifier against Malta . Papadopoulos was in the squad for the Greek national team for the Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine . After serving as a substitute in the first game against Poland , he was on the field from the start in the following games against Russia and the Czech Republic and made it to the quarter-finals with his team. There Greece was eliminated from the tournament by 2: 4 against Germany . Papadopoulos played all games for the national team as a central defender. In the following World Cup qualification , he only came to three missions due to injury. For the same reason, he was not part of the Greek squad at the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil .
