Gōtoku Sakai ( Japanese 酒井 高 徳 , Sakai Gōtoku ; born March 14, 1991 in New York City , New York , USA ) is a Japanese football player with German roots. He is under contract with Vissel Kobe . Sakai can play as a left- and right-back, as well as a defensive midfielder. Between 2011 and 2018 he played 42 times for the Japanese national team .
Sakai was born in New York City to a German mother and a Japanese father . His younger brothers Noriyoshi Sakai ( Albirex Niigata ) and Gōson Sakai ( VfR Aalen ) are also professional footballers. He is not related to the footballer Hiroki Sakai .
Career
Club career
Albirex Niigata
When he was two years old, he moved to Japan with his family. He started playing football at Sanjo SSS at the age of ten and joined Reza FS Junior Youth in 2003, then in 2006 in the youth of Albirex Niigata . The first game for the professional team he played on March 7, 2009 against FC Tokyo ; the game ended 4-1 for Albirex.
VfB Stuttgart
On January 2, 2012, Sakai was loaned from VfB Stuttgart until June 2013. The Stuttgart-based company secured a purchase option.
On February 11, 2012 Sakai made his Bundesliga debut in the 5-0 home win of VfB Stuttgart against Hertha BSC . He scored his first competitive goal for VfB on November 22, 2012 in the 5-1 away win for Stuttgart against Steaua Bucharest in the group stage of the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League . Overall, he was used in all six group games in the Europa League for VfB Stuttgart. On Matchday 16 he fouled his opponent Lewis Holtby and was sent off for the first time in his professional career with a red card . The DFB sports court banned him for three league games.
After VfB Stuttgart had used its purchase option, Sakai signed a contract on January 10, 2013 until the end of June 2016. On February 14, 2015, the 21st matchday of the 2014/15 season, Sakai scored his first Bundesliga goal for VfB Stuttgart at the 1: 2 defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim .
Hamburger SV
For the 2015/16 season Sakai moved to Hamburger SV . Sakai played his first league game for Hamburg on October 3rd in the 3-0 away defeat against Hertha BSC : There he came on for Matthias Ostrzolek in the second half . In November 2016, Sakai was named team captain by coach Markus Gisdol . Sakai scored his first Bundesliga goal on matchday 18 of the 2016/17 season when he scored in the 63rd minute in the 1: 3 away defeat against FC Ingolstadt 04 . This season Sakai was a regular player and was used in 33 Bundesliga games. Also in the 2017/18 season he was mostly a regular player under Gisdol, Bernd Hollerbach and Christian Titz and made 28 appearances. At the end of the season he had to go to the 2nd Bundesliga for the first time with HSV . Still, he extended his contract expiring on 30 May 2018 through 30 June 2020. After the victory in the first round of the German Cup in August 2019 was the Japanese team training exempted in order to look for a new club.
Vissel Kobe
In mid-August 2019, the defensive player returned to his Japanese homeland after 114 first and second division games for HSV and signed a contract with first division club Vissel Kobe .
National team
Sakai was called into different age groups and played a. a. in qualifying for the AFC - U19 Asian Championship . In qualifying, he played four games and scored two goals. For the 2011 Asian Cup , Sakai was appointed to the squad of the Japanese national team. However, he had to cancel his participation in this tournament due to an injury.
To qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London , Sakai was appointed to the Japanese U23 team. On September 21, 2011 he was in the first game of Group C of the Olympic qualification of the Asian Football Confederation in the starting eleven of the Japanese national team and won against Malaysia 2-0. Two months later, he came on as a substitute in Japan's 2-0 victory in Bahrain. After moving to Germany at the turn of the year, the Japanese U23 completed the rest of the successful Olympic qualification in the first half of 2012 without Sakai. Following the 2011/12 Bundesliga season, he took part with the Japanese U23 team at the Toulon tournament. On July 2, 2012, Sakai was appointed to the Olympic selection of Japan for the Olympic tournament in London. He played in the first four games of the tournament for the Japanese Olympic team and was only not used in the two defeats in the semifinals and in the game for the bronze medal.
On September 6, 2012 Sakai made his debut for the Japanese senior team in the 1-0 victory in the Kirin Cup against the United Arab Emirates . With his competitive debut in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup on November 14, 2012 against Oman , he finally played for Japan. With the Japanese national team, he qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
In July 2018, Sakai announced his retirement from the national team of Japan after his team had left the round of 16 of the 2018 World Cup at the age of 27.
