Timo Letschert (born May 25, 1993 in Purmerend , Netherlands ) is a Dutch football player .

Career

In the club

Beginnings

Letschert started playing football at the amateur club SDOB before joining the youth team at Ajax Amsterdam . After two years in the B-youth (U17) of the HFC Haarlem , he moved to the A-youth (U19) of the SC Heerenveen for the 2010/11 season .

After going through the junior teams, Letschert moved to FC Groningen for the 2012/13 season . There he was part of the professional squad, but was initially used in the second team Jong FC Groningen in the reserve league . In April 2013 he made his debut in the Eredivisie and came to a total of three missions (twice in the starting line-up) in the top Dutch division by the end of the season. In addition, the central defender played 26 times in the second team, for which he scored three goals. In the 2013/14 season , in which Letschert was part of the squad until the end of January, nine first division appearances and six appearances in the second team followed.

Since Letschert did not accept his reservist role under head coach Erwin van de Looi , he agreed with the club at the end of January 2014 to terminate his contract and switched to league competitor Roda Kerkrade . By the end of the season he made eleven league appearances, in which he was always in the starting line-up, and was relegated to the second division with the club .

Between Utrecht and Sassuolo

After Letschert made four appearances in the second division at the beginning of the 2014/15 season, he switched to first division club FC Utrecht on September 1, 2014 until the end of the season on loan . Letschert made 23 first division appearances in Utrecht. For the 2015/16 season , FC Utrecht used a purchase option, so Letschert stayed with the club for the long term. In his second season he established himself as a regular player and completed 34 first division games (all in the starting line-up), in which he scored three goals.

For the 2016/17 season Letschert moved to the Italian first division club US Sassuolo Calcio , with whom he received a contract that ran until June 30, 2020. In Sassuolo, Letschert was unable to prevail and made nine Serie A appearances in his first season. Letschert remained a reservist in the 2017/18 season and played seven Serie A games.

On August 17, 2018, Letschert returned to FC Utrecht on loan until the end of the 2018/19 season. There he immediately established himself again as a regular player and completed 31 league games (29 times from the start) in which he scored two goals. For the summer preparation for 2019 Letschert did not return to the squad of the US Sassuolo Calcio, but kept fit with other eliminated players on the training ground while the team moved to a training camp in Trentino .

Hamburger SV

At the end of July 2019, Letschert moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for Hamburger SV , with whom he signed a contract that ran until the end of the 2019/20 season. In his first week of training, he tore the knee ligament partially and fell out until mid-September. By then, Rick van Drongelen and Gideon Jung had established themselves in central defense under head coach Dieter Hecking . Letschert made his first short appearance on matchday 8. After commuting between the starting line-up and the bench in the following games, he prevailed as a regular player from the 16th matchday and was used in the starting line-up until the 33rd matchday. While Letschert was in central defense, his compatriot Rick van Drongelen usually played at his side, but also occasionally Ewerton or Jordan Beyer . Before the last day of the match, he suffered an inner ligament strain in his knee during training, which ended the season for him. Letschert played 24 second division games (21 times from the start) in which he scored 2 goals. The HSV missed promotion to the Bundesliga in 4th place in the second year , whereupon their expiring contract was not extended.

In the national team

Letschert played three international matches for the Dutch U21 national team between August and October 2013 . March 2016 he was appointed by then- Bond Coach Danny Blind in the senior team called, came in friendlies against France and England but not used.
