Career

society

Georgios Fotakis moved to PAOK Thessaloniki in his youth and was accepted into the first division squad there in 1999. When he was not used there, however, he went to second division Kallithea FC during the winter break and after another six months in the capital Athens to Egaleo AO .

At the club, the attacking midfielder was part of the first team from the start and in the first season of 2000/2001 they were promoted to Alpha Ethniki , the first Greek league. Three years later, the team achieved fifth place in the championship, the second-best result in the club's history and Fotakis played with the club in the group stage of the UEFA Cup the following year . After five and a half years at Egaleo, he tried the jump abroad to Scottish FC Kilmarnock in the winter of 2005/06 , but where he could not prevail and returned after half a year.

Three years at AE Larisa followed, culminating in a cup win in 2007. Then Fotakis returned to his youth club PAOK Thessaloniki. In the 2009/10 season he celebrated the runner-up with the team and therefore played in the Champions League qualification for the first time the following year . In 2011 they finished third in the championship and qualified for the Europa League . Fotakis was featured eight times before PAOK was eliminated in the round of 32.

In the summer of 2013 Fotakis moved to the 2nd Turkish league to Şanlıurfaspor . He left this club for the next second half of the season and instead went to Atromitos Athens . Further positions at Panetolikos and Panthrakikos followed . He ended his career in 2018 as a player for second division Panachaiki .

National team

Georgios Fotakis was discovered for the national selection teams as a teenager. He played several times in Greece's U-21 team and was part of the team that represented the hosts at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. After that, however, he did not make it into the senior national team . It was only when he switched to PAOK Saloniki that he came back into the focus of national coach Otto Rehhagel , who called him to the team for a World Cup qualifier for the first time in September 2009 and played him half-time for the first time on October 14.

After that, however, it took over a year until he came to further assignments under the new coach Fernando Santos . He scored his first national team goal on his return in a friendly match in Austria with a 2-1 winner, after setting up the first Greek goal. He played twice in qualifying for the 2012 European Football Championship and, as a substitute, scored the important 1-1 equalizer against Georgia.

After successfully completing the qualification, he was appointed to Greece's EM squad at the end of May 2012 .
