Giorgos Samaras ( Greek Γιώργος Σαμαράς ; born February 21, 1985 in Heraklion ), also known as Georgios , is a former Greek football player . He was able to choose between the Australian senior team and the Greek national team as his mother is from Australia . His father Ioannis Samaras was also a professional footballer.

Career

SC Heerenveen

Samaras started his career in Greece with OFI Crete , but soon moved to the Eredivisie , where he played for SC Heerenveen for four years . At the age of just 17, he made his debut there in the 2002/03 season. He scored 30 goals in a total of 128 games in which he was used - mostly as a strike partner of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in his last season . Courted by Arsenal FC , he finally moved to Manchester City .

Manchester City

The change was officially completed on January 30, 2006. The transfer fee to SC Heerenveen was around 9 million euros.

Samaras made his debut for Manchester City in the English Premier League (Barclays Premiership) on February 1, 2006 against Newcastle United , when he came on for Andy Cole in the 65 minutes . His first goal scored Samaras on February 12, 2006 in the third game against Charlton Athletic . He scored the goal in the 53rd minute with a header after being substituted on for the break. In the FA Cup and in the next two league games, Samaras was on the field for the entire season. In the game against Sunderland on March 5, 2006 Samaras scored his first brace in a 2-1 win.

Celtic Glasgow

When he moved to Celtic Glasgow in 2008 , the most successful period of his career to date began. He won the Scottish Championship four times, the Cup twice and the League Cup once. In six seasons he scored a total of 53 goals. After the 2013-14 season , Samaras' contract was no longer renewed.

West Bromwich Albion

On August 22, 2014, Samaras' official move to West Bromwich was announced.

Rayo OKC

In March 2016 it was announced that Samaras had joined the US second division club Rayo OKC . After the Oklahoma franchise was dissolved after just one season, Samaras moved to Spanish second division Real Saragossa on February 5, 2017 .

Samsunspor

In the summer of 2017 he moved to the Turkish second division team Samsunspor . There he completed 25 league games in which he scored two goals. After his contract was not renewed in July 2018, Samaras announced the end of his playing career in October 2018.

On February 23, 2006 Samaras was appointed for the first time by national coach Otto Rehhagel in the squad of the Greek national team for the international eight-nation tournament in Cyprus . Samaras had previously played in Greece's U-21s. Rehhagel put Samaras in the first game of the European champions Greece on February 28, 2006 in Limassol against Belarus and made him debut in the starting XI. After fifteen minutes he scored his first international goal in a 1-0 win. He was also a successful goalscorer in his second international match against Kazakhstan.

Samaras was part of the national team squad for the 2008 European Championship in Austria and Switzerland , the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine and the 2014 World Cup in Brazil .

On June 29, 2014, Georgios Samaras and Greece were eliminated on penalties against Costa Rica. During the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he was voted Man of the Match in the group game against Ivory Coast . He converted the penalty needed to advance to the round of 16 in stoppage time against Ivory Coast.

Awards

On December 15, 2014, Samaras and fan Jay Beatty were honored by the Greek Sports Journalists' Association for the "message of humanity and sensitivity that they send out worldwide". Samaras and Beatty received a special award for their ethical contribution to sport.
