St. Magdalena , formerly also called Prazöll , is a wine village ( Malgrei ) in Rentsch , a district of Bozen in South Tyrol ( Italy ). It is best known for the St. Magdalener , a wine made from Vernatsch grapes .

In addition to viticulture, there is gastronomy and tourism . For some farmers, vacationing on the farm is a part-time job. Apart from the farms with wineries, there are only a few houses.

geography

St. Magdalena on Prazöll is located on a moraine and loess hill east of Bolzano city center, on the southern slope of the Renon . The hamlet can be reached by car from Rentsch via a steep mountain road. Using excavations, the dynamic past of the hill zone can be determined in soil profiles. The loose sediments from ice age gravel and moraine deposits create ideal conditions for viticulture.

structure

The village can be subdivided into the districts by post

  • Untermagdalena in the lower slope area with the actual town center and the courtyards Untergageser, Mittenackerergütl, Haschhütt, Platider (Trögler), Reisegger, Eberle, Troger, Pluntsch, Ploner, Kandler, Flötzer on Prazöll, Huck on Prazöll, Flieder, Plattnergütl, Obermoser and, New building and
  • Obermagdalena along the road from the church in the direction of Ritten with the Steidler, Laimer, Gageser, Premstaller, Gleif, Untermaurer and Obermaurer farms.

history

Excavations suggest that the hill was at least used as a deposit in pre-Roman times, as the valley was still swampy at that time. The place is mentioned for the first time with the donation of vineyards to " Placedell " (Prazöll) to the Brixen cathedral chapter between 1170 and 1174.

St. Magdalena used to belong to the municipality of Zwölfmalgrei and was incorporated into Bozen in 1911. Today St. Magdalena is part of the Zentrum-Bozner Boden-Rentsch district and the Rentsch parish .

Church of Saint Magdalena in Prazöll

see main article St. Magdalena in Prazöll

The little church of St. Maria Magdalena , the patroness of the winemakers, with its frescoes is particularly well-known among art lovers . The church was first mentioned in a document in 1295 as " ecclesia sancte Marie Magdalene de Placedelle" (St. Magdalena in Prazöll) on the occasion of a Seelgerät foundation . The rectangular nave, 6 by 9.5 meters, integrates a small rectangular apse in the east, over which the bell tower rises. The highlight are the precious paintings, whose two main layers / epochs cover the entire interior. The older frescoes are in the early Gothic style and are of national importance due to their high artistic quality. The time of origin is assumed to be around 1300, an unknown master from southern Germany is assumed to be the artist. Around 70 years later, the interior was extensively redesigned. Another unknown master took inspiration from the paintings of the Paduan Guariento in Bolzano, which in turn were inspired by Giotto's groundbreaking frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. The high altar by Oswald Krad from 1667 and two procession poles by Hans Schwarzpeckh are also artistically valuable .
