Guariento di Arpo
Guariento di Arpo or Guariento d'Arpo (* around 1310 , † 1370 ) was a Northern Italian painter of the 14th century.
Guariento, about whom there are hardly any written sources, learned painting in Padua . He worked there since 1338 in the service of the Carrara . He painted a cycle of angels for the chapel in the Carrara residence. Around 1365 he stayed in Venice, where he introduced Giotto's innovations in painting in a culture that was still strongly influenced by Byzantine art .
In addition to large frescoes and altarpieces for churches, he also painted small devotional pictures for private use.
The picture of paradise
In 1365, under the government of Doge Marco Corner , he was commissioned to create a huge fresco to decorate the Great Hall in the Doge's Palace, the largest commission that the Serenissima had ever awarded a painter. The Coronation of Mary , also known as the image of paradise, extended over the entire front of the newly built Great Hall in which the Great Council met. The picture was badly damaged in the fires of 1576 and 1577, it was given up as not to be saved, and Tintoretto painted over it with his Last Judgment . The image was considered lost until the 20th century. Residues of the frescos have been found in the restoration of the Great Hall under the image of Tintoretto 1903 removed from the wall, on canvas mounted and subjected to a careful restoration 1995/96. Today the fresco is shown in the Doge's Palace.
