history

The Courtauld Institute was founded in 1932 by the textile manufacturer and art collector Samuel Courtauld , the diplomat and collector Lord Lee of Fareham and the art historian Sir Robert Witt . In addition to funding the institute, Courtauld donated a large part of his art collection. After Courtauld's death, his was also designed by the architect Robert Adamdesigned apartment building in London's Portman Square. The house became the seat of the Courtauld Institute of Art and the art collection was open to the public there. The founders 'idea was to hold art history students' classes right in front of the artworks. After Samuel Courtauld's collection of French Impressionism and Late Impressionism , the art critic Roger Fry's collection of 20th century art was added in 1934 . After the Second World War, the collections of Lord Lee of Fareham and other foundations added works by old masters ( Pieter Brueghel the Elder , Cranach , Peter Paul Rubens , Giovanni Battista Tiepolo , Quentin Massys , Anthonis van Dyck ). In the 1970s, the extensive collection of Count Antoine Seilern and Aspang moved to the Courtauld Institute of Art. In 1989 the institute moved to Somerset House , which was once the Royal Academy of Arts .

The Courtauld Gallery

The Courtauld Institute's extensive collection of paintings is open to the public. Somerset House is on the beach near London's National Gallery . In addition to its own collection, there are also temporary exhibitions and the Hermitage from Saint Petersburg shows parts of its collection in its own rooms. There are also study rooms for drawings and a dedicated library.

Courtauld Fund

As early as 1923, Courtauld donated £ 50,000 to the Courtauld Fund, which the Tate Gallery and the National Gallery would use to purchase French modern art. These images can not be found in the Courtauld Institute, but in the museums concerned.
