His collection of works of art was famous in the interwar period. He lived at Brahmsplatz 1 in Vienna. After Austria was " annexed" to Germany in 1938, Seilern emigrated to London in 1939.

He donated his art collection, which included over 120 paintings and drawings, to the Courtauld Institute of Art . It is known as The Princes Gate Collection , named after the London address of Seilern's residence.

In 2010 Stephanie Buck curated the exhibition Michelangelo's Dream at Courtauld Gallery . The exhibition was based on Michelangelo's drawing Il sogno or The Dream of Human Life from 1533, which was part of the donation. Additional drawings by Michelangelo, which Michelangelo had given to his pupil Tommaso de 'Cavalieri , have been brought together from other museums in this exhibition.

Prometheus by Oskar Kokoschka was an important work of art that Seilern himself commissioned .
