The Toše Proeski Arena ( Macedonian Арена Тоше Проески, Arena Toše Proeski ) is the national stadium of North Macedonia in the capital Skopje . The football stadium was extensively renovated between 2008 and 2013.

history

The stadium , which opened in 1947, was named Градски стадион Скопје , Gradski stadion Skopje (in German "Städtisches Stadion Skopje / Stadtstadion Skopje") until February 2009 . From 2009 to 2019 it was called the Philip II Arena , named after Philip II , King of Macedon (359 to 336 BC) and father of Alexander the Great . The current name goes back to Toše Proeski , a Macedonian singer and songwriter . In addition to the club teams Vardar Skopje and Rabotnički Skopje , the North Macedonian national football team plays their home games in the Toše Proeski Arena. The stadium also serves as a venue for concerts.

Reconstruction and expansion

From 2008 the sports facility was renovated and expanded. The new north stand was released for use on August 2, 2009 and inaugurated on August 12 with the international match Macedonia against Spain (2: 3). At that time, the facility held 25,000 spectators. In addition to around 10,000 additional seats, the new visitor tier offers 434 VIP seats and 248 workstations for journalists. The plastic seats in the stands are in the colors of the national flag in red and yellow. The renovated stadium was inaugurated on April 24, 2011. The first game in the completed arena was the qualifying game for the 2012 European Football Championship on June 4, 2011 against Ireland . Between 2011 and 2013, further work was carried out, such as laying a new playing field and replacing the athletics facility.

On June 30, 2015, UEFA announced that the match for the 2017 UEFA Super Cup would take place in Skopje's football stadium.
