history

Old and new national flag

Red was the national color of North Macedonia even before the socialist era. During the Ilinden uprising in 1903, insurgents hoisted a red flag in the Republic of Kruševo . It is said to be the origin of the red North Macedonian flag.

The flag of the Socialist Republic of Macedonia was introduced in 1944 and officially adopted in 1946. Before that, it was already in use by Macedonian partisans. It was a simple flag, with a red background color. A five-pointed red star was depicted on it in the upper left. In order to separate it in color from the red background, it was outlined in yellow. The size of the star could vary, but was mostly smaller than the flags of the other republics. Only when the flags of the constituent republics were shown together did it happen that the star of Macedonia was the same size. Sometimes the star was mistakenly moved to the center of the flag.

With independence in 1992, the Republic of Macedonia adopted a red flag with the star of Vergina, or the sun of Vergina . The ancient 16-pointed symbol was found during excavations in the Greek part of the Macedonia region . Therefore, Greece claimed the symbol, just as it turned against the state designation "Macedonia". On a blue background, the symbol is used in the unofficial flag of the Greek Macedonia . The choice of flag was based on the intervention of the nationalist diaspora overseas and sparked an unprecedented propaganda battle.

The current flag was designed by the architecture professor Miroslav Grčev .
