Description and meaning
The national flag consists of two horizontal stripes in red and white. The colors come from the princely coat of arms of the Grimaldi family , who have ruled Monaco since 1297. The official aspect ratio is 4: 5.
history
The colors are attested until 1339, but the color arrangement was different than in today's national flag. In the 17th century in particular, a red and white diamond flag, a coat of arms banner , was in use, which is still used today as an unofficial national flag. The current form was determined by an ordinance on April 4, 1881.
