The Serbian National Assembly adopted the current form of the flag of Serbia with a recommendation on August 17, 2004. Serbia was then part of the state of Serbia and Montenegro . With its dissolution in 2006, the flag received its current status as the national flag .

It consists of three equal horizontal stripes; red above, blue in the middle, white below ( heraldic red-blue- silver ). The aspect ratio of height to width is 2: 3. Each color occupies a third of the height, the small coat of arms of Serbia centered vertically and horizontally 5/14 of the flag width from the side of the flagpole (left).

The coat of arms of the republic with the five-pointed red star, which had been in use since 1946, was replaced by a crowned coat of arms, which, as in the time of the Serbian Kingdom (until 1918), contains a double-headed eagle .

The son of the Serbian king Vladislav Nemanjić I (ruled 1233-1243), the Župan of Kotor Desa Nemanjić, sent delegates from Kotor to Ragusa on July 3, 1281 to bring back part of the royal treasury . Among the treasures was the first written flag of Serbia , which consisted of the colors red and blue on a silk-like fabric (red still stands for the defense of freedom , blue for that of justice ).

The color white , on the other hand, has its origin in one of the first flags of the Serbian Revolution . Shortly before the beginning of the First Serbian Uprising (1804-1817), 300 Serb leaders gathered in the small village of Orašac in the Šumadija region and decided to start an armed uprising against the occupation by the Ottoman Empire . A red-blue-white tricolor was documented that is strongly associated with today's flag. Under Prince Miloš Obrenović , after a successful revolution, the national flag of the Principality of Serbia (1833–1882) was finally introduced in Kragujevac , which was now officially red-blue-white.

On August 17, 2004, the Serbian National Assembly passed a recommendation on the use of Serbia's national symbols. In practice, the symbols were again adopted in their form from 1882. The first time the new flag was raised on the building of the Serbian National Assembly.

In 2006, Montenegro declared its independence in a national referendum and broke away from the union of states. Then the former flag of the republic of Serbia was first to the national flag and on June 8 before the headquarters of the United Nations in New York hoisted. It replaced the flag of Serbia and Montenegro . As a result of minor changes to the state coat of arms, the appearance of the Serbian flag changed for the last time on November 11, 2010.

The flag is not hoisted in adverse weather conditions and only in daylight or illumination.

Other flags of Serbia

The civil flag and the commercial flag do not have a national coat of arms. The standards of the President of the Republic and the President of Parliament bear the large national coat of arms.

Serbian Armed Forces

The war flag at sea is used by the boats of the Serbian Armed Forces on the rivers. It is based on the sea war flag of Yugoslavia. The flag is red; in the Gösch the state flag is performed.

The flag of the autonomous province of Vojvodina in northern Serbia carries a Serbian flag, with the blue stripe in the middle exceeding the others many times over. In addition, there are three yellow stars in the middle of the flag, which symbolize the three parts of Vojvodina: Bačka , Banat and Syrmia .

Historical flag of Montenegro

The Kingdom of Montenegro , which was independent before the First World War , also wore a red, blue and white tricolor with a two-headed eagle to express its solidarity with Serbia. The Republika Srpska (one of the two entities of Bosnia-Herzegovina ) carries the flag of Serbia in slightly different colors and the aspect ratio 1: 2.

Flag of the Republika Srpska Krajina

In 1991 Serbs tried to break away in two areas of Croatia: in Kninska Krajina and in Eastern Slavonia . An internationally unrecognized de facto regime called the Republic of Serbian Krajina ( Republika Srpska Krajina ) was proclaimed in these areas . It existed during the Croatian War from 1991 to 1995 and controlled about a third of the Croatian territory . The Serbian red-blue-white tricolor with various additions was used as the official flag , such as a yellow Serbian cross in different sizes and positions or the Serbian double-headed eagle with heraldic shield and crown. The war flag showed two crossed swords on the tricolor. In 1995, in the course of Operation Oluja, the main part of the de facto regime was recaptured by Croatia. After 1998, the last areas in Eastern Slavonia came back to Croatia under UN administration .
