description

Structure of the national flag

In the Act on the Representation of the State Flag of the Slovak Republic 63/1993 of the Collection of Laws, Section 6, of February 18, 1993, the state flag is described as follows:

  1. The state flag of the Slovak Republic (hereinafter referred to as the “state flag”) is composed of three elongated stripes - white, blue and red, of the same width, arranged one below the other. The national coat of arms is affixed to the front half of the arch of the state flag.
  2. The state coat of arms on the state flag is equally spaced from the top, front, and bottom edges of the state flag and its height is equal to half the height of the state flag.
  3. At the points of contact of the shield with a color other than white, there is a white border, one hundredth of the width of the length of the state flag.
  4. No contour line is used in the national coat of arms on the national flag.
  5. The ratio of the sides of the state flag is 2: 3.

On the website of the Office of the Slovak Government, in addition to the state flag, it says:

“It was officially introduced on January 1, 1993, but it dates from 1848. We can also find the white, blue and red horizontal stripes on the Russian and Slovenian flags. They are known as the Pan-Slavic colors. The national flag is hoisted on a flagpole. The state flag is derived from the state flag. It is always firmly connected to a pole or a frame pole. "

history

The original Slovak flag in the Middle Ages consisted of two horizontal stripes in red and white. Usually red was on top.

The oldest form of the Slovak flag has been preserved in the seal of the city of Nitra from the time of King Béla IV (1235–1270). It was a white double cross against a red background.

The current form emerged during the revolution of 1848/1849, when the Slovaks fought alongside Vienna against the Hungarians (see Slovak Uprising ). On April 23, 1848, a "Slovak flag" was waved for the first time as the national flag in Brezová pod Bradlom during a theater performance. The white-red or red-white flag was used for a few months. These colors can be traced back to around 1230.

A blue stripe was added in August 1848. On September 18th, flags with the three colors in different variations were set in Velká nad Veličkou . The blue stripe was taken from the Russian and Croatian flags . The Russians were considered the protective power of the Slavs, the Croats as the brother people of the Slovaks in the Kingdom of Hungary. Some of the flags from 1848 also carried the Hungarian national coat of arms , although the color of the three mountains (Fatra, Matra, Tatra) was often changed to blue. It should be expressed that the Slovaks at that time did not yet want a separation from Hungary, but only a recognition of their nation under the Hungarian crown.

In 1868 the white-blue-red color sequence was established as the Slovak tricolor.

After the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1920, after long deliberations, the traditional Czech white and red flag was supplemented by a blue triangle, which should symbolize Slovakia, since the Slovaks had had the blue stripe in their flag since 1848. This is how the flag of Czechoslovakia was created , which is also adopted by today's Czech Republic . The flag of the Czech Republic contains a clear symbol for Slovakia in its flag to this day.

From the summer of 1938, the Catholic-nationalist Ludaks and their organizations Hlinka-Garde and Hlinka-Jugend used a red double cross in a white circle on a blue background as the “flag of the struggle for autonomy”, or “autonomist flag” for short. Together with the white-blue-red tricolor, the “autonomist flag” was used during the one-party dictatorship of the Ludakians from 1938 to 1945 in the autonomous and later independent Slovakia . After the Velvet Revolution , the current flag (with or without the coat of arms) was introduced in 1990. The use of the national coat of arms on the flag became necessary in 1992 to avoid confusion with the flag of Russia .
