The flag of Czechoslovakia was the official flag of Czechoslovakia and was used from 1920 to 1993. Today it is the flag of the Czech Republic .

History and symbolism

After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the new state temporarily used the white and red flag of Bohemia. Because of the similarity to the colors of the national Polish and Austrian flags and because of the annexation of Slovakia and Carpathian Ukraine , a commission was created at the end of 1918. In June 1919 it was decided that the new flag should contain three colors: red, white and blue. Jaroslav Kursa implemented a proposal in 1919 for a flag with a red and white stripe and a blue triangle. It was tested by a boat that was sailing along the Vltava . In parliament, however, some members of parliament protested strongly against this and suggested another solution. This proposal - from an American-Slovak flag - again rejected the remaining parliamentarians. A new flag was adopted on March 30, 1920.

After the defeat of the Second Republic in March 1939–1945, a separate flag of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia , the same three horizontal stripes of white, red and blue, and a separate Slovak state flag were used. Despite this opposition, the old flag continued to be used abroad. In 1945 the flag returned to the country and was used until 1992. After the break-up of Czechoslovakia , the independent Czech Republic took over the flag in 1993 after violent conflicts with Slovakia.
