history

Velika was first mentioned in writing in 1228 in the confirmation of the founding document of the Cistercian monastery Velehrad by Ottokar I Přemysl , after Bohuslav I von Hrabischitz bequeathed the monastery 12 Huben Land on the Velička between Velika and Louka for the salvation of his and his ancestors. This donation with the condition to found a new village under the Bandič ( judge ) of Welka was confirmed again by his son Boresch von Riesenburg . Because of the distance, the monastery did not manage the goods in Velika itself, but did not pass them on to feudal lords. Alšík von Velika, whose father was already entrusted with the goods, is the first of them to be found in the Olomouc land table in 1348 . In the same year he was followed by Ulman de Welka, a son of Poběn von Holešov. Ulman de Welka expanded his property in 1358 by 16 hubs in Tasov, which he inherited from Tass de Tasswitz and his nephew Přibik. In 1365 Ulman died without descendants, so that his property fell back on Margrave Johann Heinrich . This donated the Welka estate including the village Javorník , regardless of the fact that the greater part of Welka belonged to the monastery, in 1370 to Beneš von Krawarn auf Strážnice . A trade route to Hungary led south-east over the Welkapass. Welka has been known as a market since the 15th century. After the death of Georg Strážnický von Krawarn in 1466 his daughter Elisabeth and her husband Perchtold von Leipa in Moravia inherited Kromau. After he died in 1482, Elisabeth married Peter IV von Rosenberg in 1483 . Three years later, Peter and Wok II von Rosenberg pledged the Strážnice estate with the Velká estate and all accessories for 30,000 ducats to Johann the Elder. Ä. from Zierotin to Fulnek. After the death of Elisabeth von Krawarn († 1500), the Rosenbergs officially ceded the rule of Strážnice in 1501 to Johann von Zierotin's widow Machna and his sons Johann, Bartholomäus, Georg and Viktorin. In the 16th century, Moravian brothers settled in Velká and Javorník. In 1547 the Velká manor included the villages Javorník, Lipov and Vrbka . Velká consisted in 1594 of 72 Halbhüfnerstellen, 128 Viertelhüfnern, 56 Podsedeken and four half cottagers. The place had the privilege of four annual markets, as well as horse and cattle markets before each fair and one weekly market on Mondays. The first Moravian brothers can also be traced back to this time. The first vineyards were built on the Ležhora, others followed on the Dolní hora and the Bernátek. In 1605 Velká was devastated by a city fire. An inventory of the newly acquired items from the Brethren's house has been preserved from this period.

After Johann Dietrich the Elder J. von Zierotin died in 1620, the rule was sold for 200,000 Rhenish guilders to Franz von Magnis , who was made Count of Straßnitz in the same year. During the Thirty Years War the market town became deserted. In the hoof register of 1656, 166 of Velká's 283 properties are listed as desolate. In 1669 there were 296 vineyards around Velká. In 1702, the heavily indebted Count Anton von Magnis sold the allod rule Strážnice to Dominik Andreas I von Kaunitz for 339,000 Rhenish guilders . Between 1703 and 1708 the town was visited several times by the Kuruc . The oldest church book in Velká is from 1708; Church bills have been preserved since 1693. In 1716, Dominik Andreas son Maximilian Ulrich sold the Allodherrschaft Straßnitz with Gut Welka for the purchase price to the curator of the feeble-minded Joseph Anton von Magnis. Viticulture came to a standstill in the 19th century. In 1834 Velká consisted of 266 houses and had 1587 inhabitants. 20 families each belonged to the Helvetian and the Augsburg Church, the majority being Catholics. Since 1792 Javorník was the evangelical parish. Until the middle of the 19th century, Velká always remained subject to the Counts of Magnis on Strážnice and to the Velká manor.

After the replacement of patrimonial Velká / Welka formed from 1850 a municipality in the district administration of Göding and the judicial district of Strážnice . The local fire brigade was founded in 1880. In 1890, 1770 people lived in the market town, all of whom, with the exception of 14 Germans, belonged to the Czech ethnic group. Velká consisted of 341 houses in 1900 and had 1818 inhabitants, including 309 Protestants and 72 Jews. In 1910 the population of the town consisted of 1890 Czechs and 14 Germans. In 1927 the Myjava – Veselí nad Moravou railway started operating. The community school was established between 1931 and 1932. Between 1949 and 1960 Velká belonged to the Okres Veselí nad Moravou and came back to the Okres Hodonín after its dissolution . Since 2007 the community has had a coat of arms and a banner.

There were a total of four cemeteries in Velká. The old cemetery was by the church; there was also a Protestant and a Jewish cemetery. Velká is the largest town in the Horňácko region.
