Location of the Okres Hodonín

The Okres Hodonín (German District Göding ) located in the southeast of Moravia on the border with Slovakia in the South Moravian region in the Czech Republic .

geography

The area is 1,099 km², the district runs elongated from west to east. The area already belongs to the Alps - Carpathian band in Europe , in which the foothills of the White Carpathians are located. Another part of the district belongs to the lowlands of the Vienna Basin .

64% of the area is arable land, which is most productive on both banks of the March . 25% of the area is forested, whereby the region of the Bílé Karpaty (White Carpathians) has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO . There are several oil and gas fields in the district , and clay brick and lignite are also extracted.

Of the 78,000 people in employment , 35% are employed in industry, 10% each in construction, trade as well as health, school and social services, and 6% work in agriculture. The unemployment rate is one of the highest in the Czech Republic at 14%.

history

The history of the area goes back to the 8th century , when guard castles were built on the banks of the March and the population was converted to Christianity . In addition to being settled by Slavs , the area was also the seat of French Knights Templar for a long time . Hodonín is the birthplace of the Czech state founder Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk .
