Strážnice (German Straßnitz ) is a town in Okres Hodonín in the Jihomoravský kraj region (Czech Republic). It is located in the south-east of Moravia on the left bank of the Velička River .

history

The first written evidence comes from the 13th century. Strážnice was under Ottokar II Přemysl a strategically important city on the eastern border of Moravia. For this reason, there are several castles in the vicinity, including the Strážnice Castle , which was built after 1260 . The place initially belonged to the royal fortune, but was then sold to the Lords of Krawarn at the beginning of the 14th century . The city flourished under their reign, especially under Peter Strážnický von Kravarn, who founded the nearby village of Petrov , named after him . He also planted the first vineyards and protected viticulture through the vineyard law that he wrote. At the beginning of the 15th century, the Lords of Krawarn joined the Hussite movement. Nevertheless, the Hussites burned the city down several times, which Georg von Krawarn rebuilt.

In 1458, in the nearby Strážnice Castle, the Bohemian King George of Podebrady handed over to the Hungarian estates their King Matthias Corvinus , who had previously been captured by the Bohemians. In the 15th century the lords of Žerotín , supporters of the Bohemian Brethren , acquired the town. Under Johann III. Strassnitz was further fortified from Žerotín.

After the Hungarian uprising in 1605, the city was burned down and a large part of the population was murdered or captured. The community was looted and pillaged again during the Thirty Years' War; many residents left the city because of the re-Catholicization .

In 1628, Strassnitz was acquired by the Imperial Colonel Franz Reichsgraf von Magnis (1598–1652). He was one of the commanders of the royal armies in the battle of the White Mountain and was elevated to the status of imperial baron in 1622 and imperial count in 1637 in recognition of his services. Under his rule, Italian piarists were called to the city in 1633 . In 1652 the place fell victim to the flames again, in 1680 the plague spread, three years later and at the beginning of the 18th century the area was repeatedly attacked by Hungarian rebels. The city quickly lost its importance. In 1848, Strassnitz fell by inheritance to the Eckersdorfer line of Magnis founded by Anton Alexander von Magnis in 1780 . The last major manager of the property in Strasbourg from Magnis was the Bistritz wood industrialist and founder and shareholder of Impregna AG, Max Hrdliczka from 1901 to 1943.

During the national movement of the Czechs in the 19th century, Strassnitz and its surroundings became a cultural center. At the beginning of the 20th century, industrialization began. Today, Strassnitz is a popular place for culture and tourism with an annual folklore festival.
