history

The city was mentioned for the first time in 1113 as Golguz / Golgoc , although the place was already populated in this area in the Neolithic , during the time of the Quadi and the Great Moravian Empire . In 1365 a German city was founded in addition to the already existing Slovak settlement, which was built around a trapezoidal market square as a central facility. During the Turkish Wars, the city often suffered from fighting.

In 1920 the city got the official name Hlohovec , which actually means hazel thorn or hawthorn .

  • Michaelskirche: Gothic Catholic church , was mentioned as early as 1242 and was rebuilt several times in the following years.
  • Anna-Kapelle: next to the Michaelskirche on a polygonal ground plan built chapel from 1748; it is the burial place of the Erdődy family , who strongly influenced the city's development
  • Castle: the three-winged complex with an irregular square inner courtyard is the dominant feature of the place; it was built in the 18th century on the place of a castle that was destroyed by the Turks and only partially rebuilt and is now a boarding school

Administration and twin cities
