Peter Burian (diplomat)

Peter Burian (born March 21, 1959 in Hlohovec , Czechoslovakia ) is a Slovak diplomat. He was Slovakia's ambassador to the United States . He has been the EU Special Representative for Central Asia since 2015 .

Burian studied Oriental Studies at the Leningrad State University of the Soviet Union . After graduation, he joined the Middle East Department of the Czechoslovak Foreign Ministry in 1983 . From 1987 to 1989 he was deputy head of mission at the embassy of his country in Beirut (Lebanon). In 1991 he returned to the Foreign Ministry and went in 1992 as chargé d'affaires to the Czechoslovak Embassy in the United States after Washington, DC After the dissolution of the State on 1 January 1993 Burian was taken into the service of the newly formed Slovak Republic and directly affaires of the Washington embassy soon then as deputy head of this diplomatic mission until 1997. He then became director general of a department (“Human Dimension Affairs”) of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 2003 he headed the department for political planning and analysis there.

From 1999 to 2003 Burian was the permanent representative of his country at NATO headquarters in Brussels . From December 2, 2004 to November 2008, he was the permanent representative of Slovakia to the United Nations (UNO) and sat for it on its Security Council when the country was a non-permanent member there in 2006/2007 . In this capacity, he chaired the body for February 2007. In December 2008 Burian became Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to the United States until he was recalled to Bratislava in September 2012 . Then he was State Secretary in the Foreign Ministry in his country.

Since April 15, 2015, he has been the European Union's special envoy, responsible for relations with the Central Asian states and for representing European interests in this region.

Burian is married and has two children. He speaks English , French , Russian and Arabic .
