The flag of Brandenburg is determined by the law on the national emblems of the state of Brandenburg of January 30, 1991:

"The national colors are red - white ."
"The state coat of arms shows on a shield in white (silver) a red eagle looking to the right, adorned with golden clover stems on the wings and armed with gold." [...]
“The national flag consists of two horizontal stripes of equal width in the national colors - red above, white below - and bears the national coat of arms in the middle. The ratio of the height to the length of the flag is like three to five. "

The constitution of the state of Brandenburg was enacted on August 20, 1992 and is very brief on this topic:

Article 4. National colors and coats of arms
“The national colors are red and white. The state coat of arms is the red march eagle on a white field. "

history

The history of this flag goes back a long way. The color scheme is derived from the traditional coat of arms symbol, the red Märkischer Adler on a white (silver) background.

In 1882 the red and white provincial flag, which no longer contained a coat of arms, was officially introduced.

Flag of the GDR state of Brandenburg 1945–1952

From 1945 to 1952 the Province of Brandenburg (from 1947: "Land") used a red-white-red flag instead of this symbol, which was disavowed as a “Prussian-monarchist” symbol. This was decided by the Presidium of the Provincial Administration on October 24, 1945. On December 15, 1945 it was specified that the ratio of the width of the horizontal stripes was 2: 1: 2, so the white stripe should be narrower than the red. The flag is thus similar - except for the red color and the cloth format - the flag of Latvia . However, with the de facto dissolution of the state of Brandenburg in 1952, it was no longer used.

The newly founded federal state of Brandenburg in 1990 determined the traditional combination of the colors red and white with the Brandenburg eagle as the state flag.
