The state flag , like the state coat of arms, has been a national emblem of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1948 and also serves as the state service flag .

The state coat of arms is applied up to half of the red horizontal stripe over the German tricolor and is located in the upper corner on the pole. The state flag is used by authorities and citizens alike and in its function as a state service flag is usually hoisted next to the flag of Germany and the European Union .

The colors can be derived from the colors of the country's coat of arms. On the other hand, they mark the state of Rhineland-Palatinate as a federal state and at the same time remind us that the democratic tradition of the German colors after the Hambach Festival on May 27, 1832, the black, red and gold colors were used for the first time at a large mass event. An original flag from that time is now in the plenary hall of the Landtag of Rhineland-Palatinate in the Deutschhaus Mainz .

For this reason, the state coat of arms is in the Obereck and not in the middle, as is the case with the flags of Saarland and Lower Saxony .

Use as a coffin ceiling

The state flag of Rhineland-Palatinate is also used as a towel at state funerals . This is a special form of the flag in which the state coat of arms is oversized on all three stripes. It was last used at the state funeral for Carl-Ludwig Wagner in summer 2012.
